6 Reliable Scholarships for African Students

Everyone around the world deserves the chance to study abroad, even those who can’t afford to pay for their own education. A number of scholarships are offered to support students’ education. These scholarships may vary from partial to full scholarships and from regional to international scholarships.

Africans are one part of the people in the world that are targeted as scholarship receivers by foreign governments, foundations and universities. Here are some scholarships to study abroad for African students.

  1. Intra-ACP Academic Mobility Scheme Scholarships

The Intra-ACP academic mobility scheme is open to higher education institutions as well as to students, doctoral candidates, teachers, researchers and university staff (academic and/or administrative) from Africa, Caribbean and Pacific countries. Individuals interested in applying for scholarships should contact the relevant partnership for more information on the courses and application procedures.

Projects listed below offer postgraduate and undergraduate scholarships for African students to study abroad.

  • University of Ibadan (Nigeria) – PAMAPS (Postgraduate Academic Mobility for African Physician-Scientists)

  1. Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme Scholarships

The Intra-Africa Scholarships are for students (at masters and doctoral level) and staff (administrative and academic) nationals of an African country. Applications for scholarships under the Intra-Africa academic mobility scheme should be addressed directly to one of the selected partnerships:

  • AMAS – Moi University (Kenya)

  • GENES – Ebonyi State University (Nigeria)
  • HEED – Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia)

  • MoBreed – University of Abomey-Calavi (Benin)

  1. African London Nagasaki (ALN) Fund

The Africa London Nagasaki (ALN) Fund is a scholarship fund set up to support African scientists to undertake a master’s degree in a subject relevant to the control of infectious disease in Africa. The awards will support a candidate to undertake a Master of Tropical Medicine degree at the School of Tropical Medicine and Global Health, Nagasaki University, Japan or an MSc at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London, UK. Four or five awards will be made each year for the period 2010 to 2019. Successful applicants will receive a maximum of US$50,000 each to cover tuition fees, travel and living expenses.

An award will only be made on condition that the candidate meets the criteria set for entry on the course for which they have applied.

  1. Aga Khan Foundation Scholarship Program

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from selected developing countries, who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to develop effective scholars and leaders and to prepare them for employment, primarily within the AKDN.

Scholarships are awarded on a 50:50 grant-loan basis through a competitive application process once a year in June or July. The Foundation gives priority to requests for master’s level courses but is willing to consider applications for PhD programs, only in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professor and who need a PhD for the fulfillment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).

The Foundation accepts applications from nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above-mentioned developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.

  1. The Beit Trust Scholarships

The Beit Trust has partnership agreements with the universities mentioned below. This enables the Trust to share costs, and to increase the number of scholarships it can fund. For this reason, only applicants with acceptances from the universities listed will be eligible for Beit Scholarships.

There are six universities in the United Kingdom: Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Oxford and Strathclyde. Meanwhile, in South Africa, there are three active partners: Rhodes, Stellenbosch and UCT.

These partnerships allow the Trust to award joint scholarships (e.g. Beit-Cambridge, Beit-UCT, etc.), and may change from time to time. Applicants must first apply to, and be accepted by, a Beit partner university before applying to the Trust for a scholarship.

Beit Trust Scholarships are for postgraduate (master’s) degrees. The Trust does not provide scholarships for undergraduate study.

By Act of Parliament, the Beit Trust supports only students who are nationals of Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, and who currently live there. In addition, the Trust cannot consider applications from those who gave already begun a course.

The Beit postgraduate scholarship grant covers the following:

  • Fees, tuition costs and related academic expenses. These are paid by the Trust directly to the universities.
  • A personal allowance, index-linked in accordance with guidance from an independent authority, covering maintenance support
  • Other allowances are paid for arrival, a laptop and a return flight home
  • Economy Class tickets are provided for initial journey to the place of study, and on final return
  • No allowances are paid for spouses and other family members.

  1. Wells Mountain Foundation Scholarships

The Wells Mountain Foundation (WMI) provides education scholarships in U.S.A. for African students who are highly motivated, ambitious and are pursuing undergraduate degrees. The Foundation believes that by providing the opportunity to further one’s education, its scholarship participants will not only be able to improve their own future, but also that of their own communities.

WMI’s Student Scholars pursue degrees in various fields, including medicine and health sciences, community development, education, law, agriculture, social work, business, information technology and engineering. The WMI scholarship program currently supports students in 42 countries, with over 185 Student Scholars and 160 Graduate Scholars.
