Netherlands Government Scholarship Overview

Being part of the Netherlands Government Scholarship the Orange Knowledge Program intends to lead to the successful and egalitarian creation of a culture. The grants in specific countries are available to mid-career professionals.

The Netherlands Government Scholarship allows you to create a foreign classroom where students and staff can benefit from each other. It also allows you to build successful technical relationships with organizations in countries of Orange Knowledge. You get a fixed reimbursement as an educational institution, which includes the cost of visas, travel and insurance, study materials and a handling fee. It also includes 95 per cent of tuition fees per student picked. You cover yourself the remaining 5 per cent tuition fee.

This Netherlands Government Scholarship is available to mid-career professionals, who are citizens of the following countries, living and working in:

We stress that this Netherlands State Scholarship is available to candidates from Francophone countries as well.

The Netherlands Government Scholarship are available for a selection of:

  • short courses (duration 2 weeks to 12 months);
  • master’s programs (duration 12 – 24 months).

All classes qualifying for a Netherlands Government Scholarship are listed in Studyfinder. Use the form ‘OKP eligible – Yes’ to browse Studyfinder. The courses should fulfill the following conditions:

  • The maximum duration for master’s program is 24 months.
  • The duration of short courses should be between 12 – 365 days.
  • All courses must end on or before 31 August 2022.
  • The course or program should be full-time (this does not apply to e-learning courses).
  • The course or program needs to take place either in the Netherlands or needs to be carried out by a Dutch institution in an Orange Knowledge Program country.
  • The course or program needs to be taught in English, French or Spanish.
  • Master’s program need to be accredited.

Furthermore, the start date of the course or plan must be within a specified period; this differs by round of approvals for grants:

  • Round 1 – for all masters and short courses
    Both masters and short courses should start between 28 July and 23 November 2020.
  • Round 2 – for 1-year masters and short courses
    Masters should start between 24 November – 27 July 2021 and have a maximum duration of 1 year, Short coures should start between 24 November – 22 February 2021.
  • Round 3 – short courses only
    Courses should start between 23 February – 27 July 2021.

How to Apply

Until submitting, make sure to carefully review the eligibility criteria and ensure that your boss is able to recommend you for the scholarship. You should start making the necessary arrangements for your application when you are certain you are qualifying for the Netherlands Government scholarship.

Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Choose a course or master’s program which is eligible for the scholarship first. In the research plan website studyfinder.nl you will find the qualifying classes, stating in the search criteria: ‘OKP qualified – Yes’
  2. Contact the Dutch higher education organization providing the course for details on the course content, the deadline for applying for a scholarship (deadlines that vary by Dutch institution), the scholarship application and placement processes and the online application process and the relevant application documentation.
  3. Prepare the submission and documents relating to it. You will be required to submit a legitimate copy of your passport with your online application, a recent document from your employer and depending on your country of employment; a declaration from the government.
  4. Submit your application online through the Dutch institution that provides the course.

The selection procedure of Netherlands Government Scholarship is as follows:

  1. Candidates register with their Dutch education institution
  2. Dutch institution nominates candidates and submits grant application
  3. Embassies check eligibility and assess applications
  4. Selection results published
  5. Grants awarded

Eligibility Criteria

The aim of the Netherlands Government Scholarship is to supplement the salary you will continue to receive during the scholarship era. The scholarship is a donation to your living costs and expenses such as tuition fees, passport, hotel, benefits etc. You must however pay the difference between the amount of the scholarship and the actual costs separately.

You must meet a number of criteria that support the aim of the OKP to be eligible for the Netherlands Government Scholarship.

The criteria for scholarship applicant are as follows:

  • The candidate for a fellowship serves for one of the following types of national and/or local organizations: departments, schools of secondary or higher technical or academic education, hospitals, the private sector, committees or NGOs. The candidate for the scholarship may not work with: a multinational or multilateral organization, a globally engaged non-governmental organization that works on promoting common values, such as economic collaboration, biodiversity and environmental protection, health and human rights.
  • The candidate for a scholarship is a specialist who, having regard to his / her (1) occupation, (2) years and years of job experience and (3) connections within a subject related to local development, is in a position or could be put in a position via his / her employer to apply what he / she has learned in action.
  • The scholarship applicant holds the nationality of and is resident and working in one of the countries on the OKP Country list (see the document ‘Country List for Short courses and Masters – OKP’ on studyinholland.nl/okp).
  • The candidate for the scholarship keeps a legitimate identification file. The candidate for the scholarship has been accepted to the college or curriculum he / she wants the Netherlands Government Scholarship for.
  • The candidate for the scholarship must sent a policy statement with the application for a grant, as needed by the local government (see the paper on studyinholland.nl/okp entitled ‘policy statement requirement’).
  • The application for the scholarship indicates the amount of co-funding required is eligible to finance the study.
  • The scholarship applicant’s employer accepts the demand for a scholarship through a positive reference, announces that it will continue to pay the scholarship recipient’s wages during the scheme and will give the recipient of the Netherlands Government Scholarship an opportunity to apply what he / she has studied in action upon return.

Expired Dates

The 3 candidate application rounds for individual scholarships are:

  • 5 February-24 March (all short course and master’s program)
  • 13 May-30 June (all short course and master’s program’s with a 12-month duration)
  • 2 September-13 October (short course only)
