There are over 20 universities in Greece and some of them are listed among the best universities in the world, including the National Technical University of Athens. These universities are joined by 15 Technological Educational Institutes (TEIs), which offer higher education programs with a focus on practical and professional skills, in subjects such as applied technology, healthcare, agriculture, management, art and design. Overall, Greece’s higher education system is well-respected around the world – having to be ranked 41st globally in the first edition of the QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings.

In addition, Greece has plenty of scholarship opportunities offered to both local and foreign students. Below are the overviews of some of the most prestigious scholarships in Greece for international students.

  1. Fulbright Greece Awards Program: Offers scholarships for academic research and/or lecturing in all disciplines at various educational, cultural and research organizations in Greece. Grantees will have the opportunity to have a transformative cultural and academic experience and are provided unrivalled support both during and after their Fulbright year. Fulbright grants are awarded in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, Business and Finance, Science, Technology, Environmental Sciences, Education, Media and Government. Fulbright grants for U.S. citizens are offered every academic year.
    • U.S. Scholars – Core Fulbright Scholar Program: Up to 7 scholarships offered for studies in any area of humanities, arts, social sciences or pure and applied sciences (STEM) to collaborate with colleagues at Greek universities, museums and other cultural organizations and research centers. One Greece-Spain Joint Teaching / Research Award is also offered. Grants are for individuals with a PhD or a terminal degree and three to 10 years or more of appropriate professional experience. Grants are intended for three months for the fall term (October-December) and three to four for the spring term (February-June) of the academic year. Grantees will benefit the following from the Fulbright scholarship:
      • Monthly maintenance allowance of 2,100 USD (increased by 10% per month for up to two dependents)
      • A one-time setting allowance at 1,200 USD
      • Round-trip air fare from place of residence in the U.S. to Greece and back (for grantee and one accompanying dependent)
      • Tuition Assistance: Up to 3,000 USD per family for dependents in elementary or secondary school
      • Baggage allowance of up to 200 USD (for grantee only)
      • Modern Greek language lesson allowance of up to 450 USD (for grantee only)
      • Books / Research Materials allowance of up to 350 USD (for grantee only)
      • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE)
    • Graduate Student Research Grants: Up to 7 grants are available to recent university and college graduates who would like to conduct independent research and/or to study in Greece during academic year 2020-2021. Grants in Greece begin on September 15 and are completed by late June. Six-month applications will be considered for PhD candidates and independent arts / cultural projects. Grantees are required to participate in a two-day orientation program organized by the Fulbright Foundation in Greece in late September 2020 and a seminar in Spring 2021. Applications will be considered from well-qualified students in all fields and at all degree levels that require minimal supervision. The Fulbright Foundation especially encourages applications in: Modern Greek studies, social sciences, education policy government / public administration, arts /culture, environmental sciences and business. Graduate-level students of classical, Byzantine and contemporary Greece who wish to conduct research at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) are also welcome to apply. A separate application to the ASCSA must be filed simultaneously with the Fulbright application. Application period for 2020-2021 is from April 1, 2019 to October 8, 2019.
    • Greece-Turkey Fulbright Joint Research Award: One award per academic year offered to candidates at all degree levels, but preference is given to Master’s and PhD candidates. Applications will be considered in the following fields related to Greece and Turkey: environmental studies, marine biology, disaster management and emergency preparedness, Classical Byzantine, Ottoman studies, political science, social sciences, classical studies / archaeology, cultural policy, music and the arts, and tourism (including eco- and agro-tourism). The award is for 8-9 months with at least 4 months spent in each country. Applicants may select which country to visit first, depending on the needs of their projects. Applications close on October 8, 2019.
    • Bulgaria-Greece Fulbright Joint Research Award: One award per academic year is open to candidates at all degree levels, but preference is given to Master’s and PhD candidates. Applications will be considered in all fields, with special emphasis on the following disciplines related to Bulgaria and Greece: archaeology, history and art history (Antique, Byzantine, Ottoman and contemporary), Balkan studies, trans-border / emigration studies, economics, tourism (including eco- and agro-tourism), preservation of cultural heritage, political science, social sciences, classical studies, and the arts. The award is for 9 months with at least 4 months spent in each country.
  1. Aristotle University Scholarships: A number of scholarships awarded annually for study at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, to the following students:
    • Foreign nationals and resident aliens, both of non-Greek descent, for undergraduate or postgraduate studies in any of its Schools
    • Foreign undergraduate and postgraduate students of Universities abroad, for attending the Summer Intensive Course of the School of Modern Greek Language
    • Foreign nationals of Greek descent from Albania, Moldova, Romania, Hungary and Czech Republic, for attending the Summer Intensive Course and the Winter Course of the School of Modern Greek Language
    • Foreign undergraduate and postgraduate students of Universities abroad, in the frame of Inter-University Agreements of Scientific Cooperation, for attending the Summer Intensive Course of the School of Modern Greek Language
    • Foreign graduates of Modern Greek Studies Department of South Eastern European Universities, for postgraduate studies or research
    • Foreign postgraduate students or young researchers, for up to three months research in the field of Humanities, and particularly in the Schools of the Faculties of Philosophy, Law, Economic & Political Sciences, Education, Arts, and the School of Architecture (Faculty of Engineering)
  1. ACT Scholarships: A number of scholarships offered annually for foreign students to study in Greece, specifically at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT).
    • Study Abroad Merit Scholarship: $1,000 merit scholarship applicable towards the semester’s tuition to study abroad students who have reached sophomore status at their home institution and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6/4.0.
    • Hellenic-American Scholarship: Available during the fall and spring semesters. These scholarships cover half tuition to eligible Hellenic American applicants. The award does not include housing, orientation, field trips and study abroad fees.

Overall, the Program includes course credit, e-books for applicable courses, pre-departure support, airport welcome, studio accommodations at off-campus housing with complimentary laundry facilities, a Greek / English-speaking RA in each residence, two-day orientation, morning and evening shuttle bus-service between the residence hall and campus, ACT student ID card, ACT workshops and guest lectures, full access to Bissell Library resources, two-night trip to Athens and Delphi, day trip to the Macedonian Royal Tombs in Vergina, residence permit support, technical and IT support, academic tutors and support, on-campus resident doctor or nurse (as per office hours), counseling office (by appointment), clubs and sports, on-campus gym (limited hours), 24-hour access to running track, free Wi-Fi access on campus and in the residence, Service Learning Center access and SL placement, and transcripts.

  1. Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) Program: Six scholarships in Greece for international students and researchers, each funded with $8,300. The Sylff Program is a collaborative initiative of The Nippon Foundation, the endowment donor, and The Tokyo Foundation, the program administrator.
    • Sylff Research Abroad (SRA): Up to 5,000 USD to support research in a foreign country for a doctoral dissertation. The award may be used to cover the following expenses: international travel, tuition, visa, local transportation, insurance, living expenses, and research materials.
    • Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Stipends for recent doctoral recipients seeking a career in academia / public policy.
    • Sylff Leadership Initiatives (SLI): Up to 10,000 USD for social action projects and conferences / workshops initiated by fellows. Additional funding may be provided, but only when necessary to accommodate requests expressly made by the Sylff Association. The award may be used to cover the following expenses: international travel, domestic transportation, living expenses, meeting room / hall rental, refreshments served at meetings, acquisition of resource materials, printing and copying of documents, consumables, supplies, communication costs, etc. It may not be used for the following: salaries for personnel, purchases of property or other assets, and other items as determined by the Association. Awards may be combined with other funds or financial resources. Awards will be provided for approximately five projects per year.
    • Sylff Project Grants (SPG): Large-scale grants for projects with potential for substantial social impact. Grants are awarded up to 100,000 USD to fellows who are committed to bringing about positive social change over the long term and wish to undertake a large-scale project.
  1. Eugenides Foundation Scholarships: Awards scholarships annually to the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Hellenic Coast Guard graduates and anywhere else where donating is deemed useful by the Foundation’s administration. The scholarship programs primarily concern postgraduate and doctoral studies, without excluding the possibility of sponsorship being given for post-doctoral studies, studies at technical schools, technical lyceums, universities, etc. The Foundation not only gives scholarships for studies in Greece, but also abroad.
  2. Bodossaki Foundation Scholarships: Scholarship positions offered to assist outstanding students, undergraduates and postgraduates to carry on their studies in Greece or abroad in various academic fields. The conditions for awarding scholarships to undergraduates or postgraduates are set out in the relevant scholarships announcements, which are published in Greek and can be found in the Greek section of the Bodossaki Foundation Scholarship website.
