Fully Funded Scholarships in Sweden for International Students

Sweden is one of the countries in the world where you can study for free. The Swedish Government not only offers the countries’ citizens fully-funded scholarships or tuition waivers, but also offers those who have ambitions, potentials, work experience and a strong professional background, living outside Sweden and being a citizen of a country other than Sweden the opportunity to study for free in one of the Swedish universities/colleges.

If you want to pursue a master’s degree and are interested in studying for free at a Swedish university/college, you may want to take a look at these scholarship programmes provided by the Swedish Government.

  1. Visby Programme Scholarships for Master’s Level Studies

The Visby Programme is a scholarship programme designed and organised by the Swedish Institute – a Government agency in Sweden that has responsibility to spread information about Sweden outside the country. The Visby Programme provides scholarships for master’s and PhD level studies as well as postdoctoral research. It aims at building capacity in professionals who have the ambition to play an active role in society and to contribute to a positive development in their home countries and region.

The scholarships are available for professionals in the programme countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine), who display both intellectual ability and leadership potential, regardless of age, gender and religious beliefs. About 65 scholarships will be offered for master’s level studies. Eligible master’s programmes for 2019/2020 can be found in the Swedish Institute website on the Visby Programme scholarship for master’s level studies’ page. Awardees of this scholarship will receive:

  • Tuition fees (which will be paid directly to the Swedish university)
  • Monthly grant of SEK 10,000 for living expenses
  • Travel grant for SEK 5,000
  • Insurance against illness and accident (accompanying family members included)
  • Membership of the Swedish Institute Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a platform to grow your network and experience while in Sweden
  • Membership of the Swedish Institute Alumni Network after your scholarship period – a platform for further professional development and to stay in touch.

In order to be considered as eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following criteria.

  • You must be a citizen of, and currently living in one of the seven programme countries.
  • You must be liable to pay application and tuition fees to the universities – find out whether you meet this criteria or not at se.
  • You must be admitted (or conditionally admitted) to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 4 April 2019.
  • You have not lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
  • You do not have a Swedish or EU/EES citizenship, permanent residence permit or a work permit in Sweden. If you have dual citizenships, you may still apply for a Visby scholarship, but you must apply with your eligible citizenship both to the Swedish Institute and University Admissions.
  • You have not previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship at a Swedish university/college. If you are a former participant of the Swedish Institute Summer Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP) and/or have attended Swedish Institute summer courses in the Swedish language or the Swedish Institute Summer University (SISU), you may still apply.
  • You do not hold a degree from a Swedish university/college and/or not currently enrolled in a study programme at a Swedish university/college.

The application for this scholarship is open on 4-14 February 2019 for the academic year 2019/2020. To apply, first, find an eligible master’s programme that you would like to attend. Next, apply for the master’s programme at University Admissions, then apply for a Swedish Institute scholarship and, finally, wait for the announcement of successful scholarship recipients.

During the application period (4-14 February 2019), submit the required documents listed below through your online application portal.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Letter of reference

Only submit the required documents listed above in your online scholarship application. Any other documents will not be considered. Documents must be uploaded as .doc, .docx, or .pdf and be completed in English.

  1. Swedish Institute Scholarships for Global Professionals (SISGP)

The SISGP offers scholarships to a large number of master’s programmes starting in the autumn semester 2019. The scholarships are offered to professionals in 34 countries, including:

The open application period is 4-14 February 2019, and an estimation of 300 scholars will be awarded for full-time (one-year or two-year) master’s studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester. They will receive:

  • Tuition fees (paid directly to the Swedish university)
  • Living expenses of SEK 10,000 per month
  • One-time payment travel grant of SEK 15,000 for the entire study period (not applicable to students already living in Sweden)
  • Insurance against illness and accident
  • Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a platform to grow professionally and build your network while in Sweden
  • Membership of the SI Alumni Network after your scholarship period – a platform for continued networking and further professional development

The scholarship does not cover additional grants for family members and application fee to University Admissions. Also, it is granted for one academic year (two semesters) at a time. The scholarship will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters, provided that you have passed your courses/credits. The scholarship period cannot be changed or extended beyond the awarded scholarship period, nor can the scholarship be transferred to a study programme other than the awarded master’s programme.

Before applying, you must ensure that you meet the following criteria to be eligible for the Swedish Institute scholarships.

  • You must have a minimum of 3,000 hours of demonstrated employment
  • You must have demonstrated leadership experience from your current or previous employment
  • You must be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities and have been admitted to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 4 April 2019
  • You must be a citizen of a country that is eligible for the scholarship programme

If you feel you have met the criteria, submit your application with the following documents through your application portal.

  • Motivation letter (form provided on the SI website) – as a PDF-file
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) (template provided on the SI website)
  • Two different letters of reference (form provided on the SI website) – the letters should be typed, printed and signed by the referee and stamped with an official stamp of the referred organisation or a notary office, and uploaded as a PDF-file. At least one letter of reference must be based on your work experience. It will be a merit if the second letter of reference is based on your involvement in networks or civil society organisations outside of your regular work.
  • Proof of work and leadership experience (form provided on the SI website) – the same rules on the letters of reference also apply to this document
  • A copy of your passport – included together with the CV as a last fourth page

Make sure every single document listed are submitted, other wise your application will be disqualified. Do not submit any other documents than the required ones, as it will not be considered.
