How to Apply Master Degree in The University of Sussex

In this section, we will explain about how to apply for Master degree at the University of Sussex. Most applications for Masters courses are made directly to Sussex through the postgraduate application system. However, you may want to see some necessaries requirements below.

Entry Requirements

To find the specific entry requirements for your course, see our Masters courses.

However, you also need to meet our general entry requirements:

  • Applicants should be excellent at least ai upper second-class (2:1) or lower second-class (2:2)
  • Applicants possess undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) depending on the course you are applying for.

Language Requirements

If an applicant happens to be an international student, he/she needs to meet our English language requirements. He/she can also be successfully complete our pre-sessional English course.

If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you meet the University of Sussex English language requirements. This should correspond to the degree you apply for. Applicant can do this in a number of ways:

  • He/she can take an English language proficiency test, such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • He/she can also provide evidence of other English qualifications that confirm your language level
  • He/she can also provide evidence that you meet one of our English language exemptions, or
  • successfully pass the Sussex Centre for Language Studies pre-sessional English course.

For your information, in terms of IELTS applicant should know these three levels:

  • Higher: a small number of degrees have a requirement of IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component.
  • Standard: an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each of the four components.
  • Lower: for postgraduate degrees in Mathematics and Physics (except Physics with Education MSc), and the PG Dip in International Teacher Education, the requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 6.0 in each component.

Do take note, that the University would expect English language qualifications to have been achieved within the TWO YEARS prior to starting your course.

Visa Requirements

If applicant requires a visa to study in the UK, the University provides you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You can view and download your CAS statement through the postgraduate application system.

Application Procedures

Do read thoroughly the steps in the following sections. Make sure you understand and do all the steps correctly.

  1. Set up your online account

For most courses, you apply through our postgraduate application system. You need to:

  • Create an account by using our postgraduate application system
  • Click on the URL in the activation email to activate your online account
  • Log in to your account using the email address and password you chose when you registered
  • Search for a course using our postgraduate course search function
  • Click ‘apply’ to begin your application. You can apply for up to three courses.

1. Fill in your personal details

Fill in all of your personal details. If you need a visa to study in the UK:

  • You should complete this in your application
  • Submit your passport (and previous visa(s) if you have studied in the UK) to get a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.
  • Fill in your current and mailing address
  • You must provide a valid home address.
  • Give a correspondence address if you want us to contact you at a different address.

2. Fill in education and qualifications

In this section, you need to include your:

  • Previous qualifications: give details of any further- or higher-education qualifications (including Pre Masters courses) you have completed, or are studying
  • Previous university: select your previous university from the list. If you are an international student, type the name of your university into the text box and select your country from the list
  • Subject of study: include the title and level (such as BSc or MA) of the course you have completed or are studying
  • Class or grade: your final grade (GPA) or Pass or 2:1. If you have not completed the qualification, give the date you’ll receive the result
  • Extra information: fill in the description box if you want to give more information, such as module descriptions.

3. English language requirements

You must tell us if English is your first language. If English is not your first language, check our English language requirements and either tell us:

  • The English language qualification you have and your grades. Upload a copy of your certificate
  • If you will do an English language test in the future.
  • If your language qualification is not on our list of accepted qualifications, give details and evidence so that we can consider it as an alternative.

4. Relevant experience

You can give information about relevant paid or voluntary experience to support your application, and attach any associated certificates or testimonials.

5. Supporting documents and references

This section requires you to provide:

  • Your personal statement
  • Your degree certificates
  • A transcript of your grades
  • Your current English language qualification
  • At least one academic reference from your most recent university, or your referee’s contact details
  • Your Curriculum Vitae (CV).

Scholarship Benefits

We offer full- and part-time courses and some courses include an integrated placement year. If you are an international student with a Tier 4 visa (students outside the UK and EU), you can only study Masters courses full-time.

  • Postgraduate diplomas (including CPE Common Professional Examination)
  • Corruption, Law and Governance LLM (delivered in Qatar)
  • Development Studies MA
  • Early Years in Education MA
  • Globalisation, Business and Development MA
  • Governance, Development and Public Policy MA
  • Power, Participation and Social Change MA
  • Poverty and Development MA
  • Masters degrees in Social Work (if receiving a NHS bursary)
  • PGCE courses
  • Schools direct teaching courses
  • Any Masters funded by the research councils (e.g. those receiving ESRC 1+3 funding)

Type of award

The scholarship for Master degree in University of Sussex is in the form of tuition fee reduction.

Amount

You will receive awarded as a tuition fee reduction.

Eligibility

Please note the following eligibilities. And make you sure you correspond to the requirements:

  • be graduating from a Bachelors Degree at Sussex in 2020
  • be taking up a place on a full time Masters in 2020 (check the ‘Who isn’t eligible’ tab for excluded courses)
  • achieve a First Class or Upper Second Class honours degree
