Fully Funded Scholarships for International Students in UK

The United Kingdom is one of the best study destinations in the world. With great educational systems, and a number of prestigious universities, UK is also a place where international students can have the opportunity to study for free. The UK government has established a number of prestigious scholarship programs in order to support both domestic and foreign students to pursue higher education. The scholarships may be offered partially or fully. Here are some fully funded UK scholarships for international students 2019.

Chevening

Chevening is the UK Government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations, Chevening offers two types of award – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British embassies and high commissions throughout the world.

Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders and influencers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

A full Chevening Scholarship normally comprises:

  • Payment of tuition fees
  • Economy travel to and from the recipient’s country of residence by an approved route for the recipient only
  • An arrival allowance
  • The cost of an entry clearance (visa) application for the recipient only
  • A departure allowance
  • A contribution of up to ₤75 for TB testing, where this is required
  • A travel top up allowance
  • A monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover accommodation and living expenses. The monthly stipend will depend on whether the recipient is studying inside or outside London.

A Chevening Scholarship is tenable for 12 months only but may terminate sooner in circumstances where the recipient’s course is less than 12 months in length. A Chevening Fellowship normally comprises:

  • Payment of program / tuition fees
  • Return economy airfare to the UK from the fellow’s home country, by an approved route for the fellow only
  • An arrival allowance
  • Reimbursement of an entry clearance (visa) application for the fellow only
  • Reimbursement of accommodation council tax where a fellow arranges and resides in private accommodation for the duration of their award
  • An outward excess baggage allowance
  • Monthly personal living allowance (stipend) to cover living expenses including local travel, food, entertainment and all accommodation related expenses include bills and furnishings.
  • Reimbursement of the NHS levy or a contribution towards travel insurance of up to ₤200
  • Travel top up to attend Chevening events in the UK) depending on host location)

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships are offered to students from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, for full-time master’s study at a UK university. Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.

The purpose of this scholarship program is to contribute to development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics, and to contribute to UK higher education and foreign policy aims by encouraging collaboration and links.

The scholarships are intended for high-quality postgraduate students who have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries with the knowledge and leadership skills they acquire. Only students of the following Commonwealth countries are eligible to apply: Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Cameroon, Dominica, Eswatini, Fiji, the Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Montserrat, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, St Helena, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, and Zambia.

These scholarships are offered under six themes:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Strengthening health systems and capacity
  • Promoting global prosperity
  • Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

Each scholarship provides:

  • Approved airfare from home country to the UK and return at the end of the award
  • Approved tuition fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of ₤1,084 per month, or ₤1,330 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area
  • Warm clothing allowance (where applicable)
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation (where applicable)
  • Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • Monthly child allowance for widows, divorced, or single parents who are accompanied by children and are living with them at the same address in the UK.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships are for candidates from low and lower middle income Commonwealth countries, seeking part-time master’s study by distance learning on selected courses offered by UK universities. these scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship program aims to contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals in key development areas. Subject of study must be developmental in nature, and must be aligned with one of the following themes:

  • Science and technology for development
  • Strengthening health systems and capacity
  • Promoting global prosperity
  • Strengthening global peace, security and governance
  • Strengthening resilience and response to crises
  • Access, inclusion and opportunity

The eligible commonwealth countries include: Bangladesh, Cameroon, Eswatini, the Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, India, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu and Zambia.

The awards are for full-time or part-time study of a taught course at postgraduate level by distance learning. These scholarships do not support research degrees or undergraduate study. Funding is available for five academic years from the start of an approved program. Awards cannot be extended or renewed.

The scholarships are valued ₤18,000 each and must cover all elements of the award, including:

  • Course tuition fees
  • Grant to contribute to study-related costs
  • Partnership development costs
  • Any UK residential program(s) – where a university intends to run a UK residential program as part of the course, the university is expected to provide a specific level of support. See the following bullet point below.
  • Return travel from the Scholar’s home country to the UK location
  • Cost of UK visa
  • Maintenance stipend of ₤1,084 per month (₤1,339 for Scholars in London), to be paid for the full duration of the UK residential. These amounts are set by the UK government for all students on government funded scholarships, and increase annually.

Westminster Undergraduate Full International Scholarship

The University of Westminster offers a full-funded international scholarship for undergraduate studies at the University. Each of these UK undergraduate scholarships provides full tuition fee award, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London. The scholarships are available to international students from developing countries, who hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University. The scholarship will be renewed each year subject to satisfactory academic performance.

For this scholarship purposes, the term ‘developing’ includes middle income countries. The following are the countries considered to be ‘developed’. Students from countries that are not mentioned are eligible to apply.

Selection for these scholarships will be based on academic excellence, financial need and development potential.
