Europe consists of many favorite study destinations with some of the best and most prestigious universities in the world. Besides the excellent education system in most European countries, Europe is also a great destination for those seeking for adventure or wishing to learn a different language.

Living expenses in Europe vary for each country. However, students from outside Europe wishing to pursue studies in this area may not have to worry about financial matters. There are many scholarship opportunities in Europe waiting to be taken by foreign students. Below are some of the most prestigious fully funded master scholarships in Europe worth applying for.

  1. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) Scholarship

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) is a program managed by EACEA that offers fully funded scholarship opportunities for students from all over the world. Scholars and guest lecturers can also participate for the opportunity.

EMJMD is a prestigious, integrated, international study program, jointly delivered by an international consortium of higher institutions. EMJMDs award EU-funded scholarships to the best student candidates applying under annual selection rounds. The study must take place in at least two of the program countries. Part of the studies can also take place in a partner country if there is a partner-country institution involved.

The EMJMD scholarship covers one’s participation costs, including the tuition fees, library and laboratory costs, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to one’s participation in the Master’s program. It also represents a contribution to travel and installation costs and includes a monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the study program.

The total amount of the scholarship varies according to the duration of one’s course and nationality (non-EU students receive larger scholarships). A minimum of 75% of the scholarships are awarded to candidates from partner countries.

To participate in the EMJMD, one must have obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognized equivalent level of learning, according to national legislation and practices, in the degree awarding countries. It is forbidden to benefit from another EU-funded scholarship scheme while receiving an EMJMD scholarship.

  1. CIUF-CUD Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries

The CIUF-CUD Scholarships in Belgium offers master scholarships in Europe to students from developing countries who wish to pursue a one-year specialized master’s degree program or a 4-to-6-month advanced training course within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Belgium.

This scholarship program is provided by ARES. Each year, ARES grants an average of 150 scholarships as part of the master’s program, and 70 grants for training courses, to citizens from countries in the global South. The scholarships and grants include international travel costs, living allowance, indirect mission fees, arrival allowance, tuition and return fees, registration fees, insurance fees, as well as travel costs that are part of inter-university training.

Below is a list of countries considered as developing countries of which the nationals are eligible to apply for scholarships and grants from ARES.

  1. VLIR-UOS Master Scholarships in Europe

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students and professionals from a number of countries to study in Flanders as well as travel grants to Flemish/European students to do fieldwork/internships in one of the 31 scholarship countries in Africa, Asia or Latin America.

The scholarships in Flanders are awarded to applicants from the following eligible countries, to attend one of the selected trainings or master’s programs taught in English at a Flemish university or university college.

  • Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe
  • Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Philippines, Vietnam
  • Latin America: Bolivia, Cub, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, Suriname

The scholarships for master’s programs (ICP / international master programs) are accredited master programs (EQF 7) consisting of 2 or 4 semesters (60 or 120 ECTS respectively) on a subject that is relevant to or specific for development. A selection of 15 ICPs is supported and 12 scholarships are provided per ICP program.

Scholarships are only provided for the full duration of the master program. It is not possible to apply for partial scholarships. The amounts can change at any time in line with decisions of the funding payment. Generally, the scholarships include monthly living allowance, indirect travel costs, logistical allowance, program related travel costs, insurance, airline tickets and tuition fees.

  1. Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program

The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program was established by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to enable French higher education institutions to attract top foreign students to enroll in their masters and PhD programs. The scholarships are available in four main fields:

  • Law studies
  • Economics and management
  • Engineering sciences at master’s level, Science in a broad sense at PhD level (engineering sciences; exact sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry and life sciences, nano and biotechnology, earth sciences, sciences of the universe, environmental sciences, information and communication science and technology)
  • Political sciences.

The Eiffel Program for mater’s level studies awards scholarships for:

  • a maximum of 12 months for entry at Master 2 level,
  • a maximum of 24 months for entry at Master 1 level,
  • a maximum of 36 months for an engineering degree.

The scholarships are awarded on the condition that the student complies with the academic requirements of each academic year.

The Eiffel scholarships consist of a monthly allowance of €1,181 (a maintenance allowance of €1,031 and a monthly stipend of €150). In addition, the following benefits are covered:

  • international transport
  • national transport
  • local transport
  • health insurance
  • mutual health insurance
  • cultural activities

Subject to certain conditions, students may also benefit from a housing allowance, within the 3 months following signature of the housing contract.
