About the Good Samaritan Scholarship

What is a Good Samaritan scholarship?

In general, it is a financial aid that the Good Samaritan Foundation gives annually to high school graduates, undergraduate and graduate students, and Good Samaritan employees to achieve their educational goals.

These scholarships are available to those majoring in health care at colleges or universities throughout the United States.

Meanwhile, Reverend Clyde J. Verheyden established the Good Samaritan Foundation in 1951. Since its inception, the Foundation’s primary goal has been to improve the pool of qualified healthcare professionals available for the public.

The Good Samaritan Foundation has grown to be one of the nation’s largest private scholarship givers because to the generosity of its supporters. Currently priority is placed on applicants in certain states. In particular, there are eight different types of Good Samaritan scholarships available as you can see below:

1. Chris and Laura Nardine Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student who will attend Vincennes University (VU) in a health care related field of study. You must be enrolled at VU on a full- or part-time basis with minimum six credit hours to apply.

2. Good Samaritan Physician Scholarship

As the name implies, this scholarship is awarded to a student who is currently enrolled in an accredited graduate school of medicine working toward a MD or DO degree. Hence, you must be enrolled in a medical college or university on a full-time basis to be considered for this scholarship.

3. Gloria Van Eaton Memorial Scholarship

It is another Good Samaritan Hospital scholarship awarded to a student who will attend VU. To apply, you must be a Good Samaritan employee or a qualifying student volunteer who has completed 100 hours the year prior.

4. Nursing and Allied Health Care Scholarship

These Good Samaritan College of Nursing scholarships are available to students pursuing a degree in nursing. These conditions include admission to a college or university on a full- or part-time basis.

5. Robert L. (Bob) Winkler Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is open to students pursuing a degree in radiology. As an applicant, you must join a college or university, either on a full- or part-time basis. Also, you must have at least six credit hours.

6. Ross Darkis Memorial Scholarship

Students who are pursuing a degree in occupational therapy are recommended to apply for this scholarship. Eligibility is determined based on acceptance to a college or university on a full- or part-time basis.

7. The Beacons of Excellence Scholarship

This scholarship is available to a graduating high school senior, from each high school in Knox County, Indiana, and Lawrence County, Illinois. Applicants are required to pursue a field of education in health care upon approval.

8. The Matt Bowman Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is open to a Good Samaritan full- or part-time employee of any department or discipline. Applicants must be seeking assistance for health-related certifications, review courses, conferences, or educational boot camp fees.

Program Benefits

By receiving a Good Samaritan scholarship, you will be entitled to financial assistance towards your higher education costs. It may include tuition, books, and other related necessities.

Donations collected and investment returns are two major determinants of the annual award amounts. Therefore, we are unfortunately unable to give exact figures for each award. However, past scholarships have been provided in varied amounts depending on the availability of funding for this purpose.

Eligibility Requirements

There are some general requirements that you will need to meet to be considered for any scholarship from the list above. To be eligible for a Good Samaritan scholarship, you must:

  • Be able to prove your financial need
  • Have at least a 3.0 high school GPA and a 3.0 college GPA to be considered (if applicable)
  • Pursue a health care-related subject of study
  • Fulfill specific criteria of scholarship for which applied
  • Fill out and submit the application form, as well as any supporting documentation
