Know Your Country: Economic Activities in Ethiopia

The economy of Ethiopia is a mixed and transition economy with a large public sector. The country produces and exports various goods such as coffee, qat, gold, leather products, and oilseeds. This shows that the country has great potentials in agriculture. Production is overwhelmingly of a subsistence nature, and a large part of commodity exports are provided by the small agriculture cash-crop sector. Many other economic activities depend on agriculture, including marketing, processing, and export of agricultural products.

Forest products by Ethiopia are mainly logs used in construction. The silvicutural properties are used in construction and manufacturing, and as energy sources. The country derives about 90% of its electricity needs from hydropower, which means that electricity generation, as with agriculture, is dependent on abundant rainfall. In general, Ethiopians rely on forests for nearly all of their energy and construction needs.

Aside from wholesale and retail trade, transportation, and communications, the services sector consists almost entirely of tourism. Since 2002, the number of tourists that enter the country has constantly increased. In 2015, Ethiopia was ranked the “World’s Best Tourist Destination” by the European Council on Tourism and Trade.

Know What You Need: Find the Right Scholarship for You

Generally, scholarships vary into two types: need-based and merit-based scholarships. Regardless of what type of scholarship you are applying for, you know you need the scholarship to support you in financing your studies abroad. However, did you know that choosing what scholarship to apply for affects your success in receiving it? You can only receive a scholarship if you meet all the requirements and prove that you are deserving of the scholarship.

In order to succeed in this process, first of all, you will need to know what you need and how you can prove it. Of course, you need money to finance your studies abroad, but according to the two most-common types of scholarships (need-based and merit-based), you are seen as one or another type of student wishing to receive a “gift” or an “award” from a scholarship provider. To find out which type of student you are, you will need to learn the differences between a need-based financial aid and a merit-based financial aid.

  • Need-Based Financial Aid

The need-based financial aid can come in the form of grants, scholarships, work-study or loans, and is available to help your family pay for your studies. Need-based financial aid is awarded to your family based on their financial need, as determined by the government or school awarding it.

Some need-based financial aid is considered “gift aid”, which means that the money provided is a gift to you, with no strings attached. Gift aid includes grants and scholarships and your goal should be to maximize this type of aid before seeking other sources of help.

On the other hand, there is “self-help aid” which requires something from you. In the case of loans, it requires repayment with interest. For work-study, it requires you to put in hours of work to earn the funds. This kind of aid requires some investment from you.

  • Merit-Based Financial Aid

Merit-based financial aid is usually awarded in the form of scholarships or grants and is not awarded with regards to your family’s financial circumstances. Instead, merit-based financial aid is awarded based on academic performance or other talents or contributions.

Many universities offer an academic scholarship program. It is common for universities to look at your GPA, class rank, and SAT scores when determining whether or not you qualify for this type of financial aid.

You may also receive merit-based financial aid for athletic, artistic or musical talents, just to name a few. Get in touch with each school to see if they have programs like this. You may need to reach out to a coach or department chair after contacting admissions if you or they think you might be a good candidate for a non-academic merit scholarship.

Merit-based financial aid isn’t only provided directly by colleges. Private organizations and foundations often offer merit-based scholarships and grants.

After you have figured which type of scholarship is most suitable for you (the need-based or the merit-based), you will need to decide whether you want full support of scholarship or split the financing for your studies into two with the scholarship. There are two types of scholarship programs: one that offers a full scholarship and one that offers a partial scholarship. Choosing which one of these depends on how far you can afford your study. If you choose the fully funded scholarship, you won’t need to worry about how to pay for your study or how to survive in your study destination or how you can even get there and back to Ethiopia. The fully funded scholarship for Ethiopian students will cover all the needs for your study, including tuition fees, books and living expenses, travel costs, and insurance.

On the other hand, if you choose the partial scholarship, it means you are responsible to pay half, a quarter, or three quarters of the entire study expenses, including tuition fees, books and living expenses, travel costs, and insurance. Partial scholarships may vary according to the amount of expenses that they cover (25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% for tuition fees only). Some partial scholarship providers allow you to receive other partial scholarships. Some requires you to pay your own part of funding your study. You can provide your part by getting a part-time job whilst pursuing your degree.

Once you’ve narrowed your options, find the suitable scholarship that is available for the field of study you want to pursue. This step may be easier if you are choosing from a list of scholarship programs offered by the university you’re applying for admission since it is usually offered in the related department. If you are choosing a scholarship from a wider range of options, you can use scholarship search engines that you can find online.

The trick to succeeding in your application for a scholarship is that you must meet all the requirements and prove that you are deserving of the scholarship. You can do this by giving an outstanding and strong statement in your scholarship essay and motivation letter.

Another secret to this success is that scholarship providers, especially local scholarships provided by the government or local organizations or foundations, usually prefer candidates that show how eager they are to contribute towards the country’s development. This also means that the major chosen to study with the scholarship takes a big role in determining your chances to get the scholarship. The more relevant the major you choose is in giving contribution to your country’s development, the bigger chances you’ll get in receiving the fully funded scholarship. However, keep in mind that not every scholarship program has such preferences.
