Burger King is one of the most well-known fast-food franchises on the planet. To give back to society, the corporation awards multiple Burger King scholarships every year. In commemoration of Burger King co-founder James “Jim” W. McLamore, the Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship was established in 2000.
The program was intended to assist students from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. They are pursuing a four-year degree at a university or college. It is given out every year. The amount of money offered and the number of applicants will decide the number of prizes.

About Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship
Burger King McLamore Foundation, which was established in October 2005, is the charitable arm of the Burger King system and is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Together with Burger King Corporation employees, franchisees, suppliers, and guests, the foundation has positively impacted the communities in which they work and live.
Today the foundation administers the Burger King Scholars Program and the BK Family Fund. The Burger King Scholars Program assists employees, employees’ spouses or domestic partners, employees’ children, and high school seniors in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada in continuing their education.
The program has awarded more than $44 million in scholarships to more than 39,000 students. Last year alone, $4 million in scholarships were awarded to nearly 3,700 deserving students.
Integrity, high standards, entrepreneurial spirit, good citizenship, and education were the values that defined Burger King brand co-founder James W. McLamore. Those values helped realize a dream, and those same values are the core of the Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship, which will continue to build on his legacy and his commitment to education.
This scholarship program is administered by Scholarship America. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability, or national origin. The Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship is made possible through the generous support of the Burger King system and the Burger King McLamore Foundation.
Program Benefits
Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship provides $1,000 annually to help students offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. However, this scholarship’s total number of awards varies depending on the availability of funds and students meeting their academic progress.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship: General Track
This scholarship is available to all high school seniors who meet the criteria below. Generally, to qualify, applicants must:
- Be living in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, for the entire upcoming academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Be graduating high school seniors (the U.S. and Puerto Rico), graduating from grade 12 (Canada), or graduating from home school education in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada
- Have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent
Additionally, note that employees, spouses or domestic partners of employees, and dependent children of employees who meet the General and Employee-Based Track eligibility requirements will be considered for an award in both tracks but will receive only one prize if selected.
Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship: Employee-Based Track
The Employee-Based Track will have two components as follows:
1) Employees, spouses or domestic partners of employees, and dependent children of employees pursuing a traditional post-secondary education
Applicants must:
- Be living in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Plan to enroll for the next academic year at an accredited two or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Be an employee of Burger King Corporation or a participating Burger King franchisee (franchisees), or be a spouse (unless legally separated) or domestic partner of an employee, of Burger King Corporation or franchisees, or be a dependent child of an employee of Burger King Corporation or franchisees (Designated Employer)
- Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent
- Be graduating high school seniors (the U.S. and Puerto Rico) or have attained a GED, graduating from grade 12 (Canada), graduating from home school education in the U.S., Puerto Rico or Canada or current college undergraduates or graduate-level students in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or Canada
Also, employees must be active on Designated Employer’s payroll for at least six months as of the application deadline date and employed when awards are first announced. On the other hand, employees and their spouse/domestic partner may be enrolled part-time or full-time. However, children of employees must be enrolled full-time, without interruption, for the entire academic year.
2) Employees and spouses or domestic partners of employees pursuing an enrichment program
Applicants must:
- Be living in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Plan to enroll less than part-time or on an intermittent basis in GED, enrichment, certification, or another course that enhances learning
- Be an employee of Burger King Corporation or a participating Burger King franchisee (franchisees), or be a spouse (unless legally separated) or domestic partner of an employee of Burger King Corporation or franchisee (Designated Employer)
Additionally, employees must be active on Designated Employer’s payroll for at least six months as of the application deadline date and employed when awards are first announced.
Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship: James W. McLamore Whopper Scholarship
Recipients will be chosen from the Burger King Scholars pool, including Burger King General Track and Burger King Employee-Based Track applicants. Recipients must be citizens of the United States or Canada and students who:
- Are seniors at a high school or home school in the United States, Canada, or Puerto Rico
- Have a cumulative unweighted grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.3
- Are applying as a full-time freshman to a four-year accredited college or university that is located in the United States or Canada and is exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
- Demonstrate an active leadership role in community service, athletics, and/or similar co-curricular activities (student government, team sports, fraternal life, etc.)
- Have a minimum ACT Composite score of 25 or a minimum combined SAT score of 1220
- Demonstrate substantial work experience and financial need
However, note that officers, directors, spouses/domestic partners, and children of officers and directors of the Burger King McLamore Foundation are ineligible to apply for a scholarship.
Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship Requirements
A current, complete high school or college transcript of grades must be uploaded with your application. Grade reports are not accepted. Unofficial or online transcripts must display your name, school name, rates, and credit hours for each course and term taken.
How to Apply for a Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship
Start by clicking on the “Create an Account” button at the bottom of this page. You will need to create a username and password to register for a student account. Then, you will be notified through an email validation process before an account is made for you. You must use a valid email address. The final step in creating your account is to complete the information requested in the student profile.
After your student account is created and provided with profile information, you will have access to the application. During the application process, you will leave the site by clicking on the “Log Out or Save” and “Log Out” buttons located on the site. To log in, you must enter your username and password as provided when registering for a student account.
You may wish to gather the following information that will be needed for the application process:
- A list of your work experiences and involvement in school and community activities
- Burger King employee information if your application is to be affiliated with an employee
- A current (official or unofficial) transcript of grades
- If applicable, your family’s financial information. A copy of your parent’s most recent tax form filed with the IRS or Revenue Canada may be helpful to look at when filling out that section of the application
Carefully review your application before submission. We recommend that you print a hard copy of your application to retain for your records. Also, you should not send printed copies of your online application to Scholarship America or Burger King McLamore Foundation. Additionally, complete all application pages with required fields in the format described to submit the application.
Closing Date
Your application is not complete unless submitted electronically on or before December 15. If 50,000 applications are received before the closing date, then the application will no longer be available. Remember that once you submit your application, you can’t make further revisions. You are solely responsible for gathering and submitting all information necessary to the application process.
