5 Scholarships with Automatic Consideration

As the name suggests, the scholarships below are open to all students who are U.S. residents or permanent residents. No additional application is required. First-year and transfer students who meet the established criteria will be automatically considered for these awards.

Austin E. Knowlton Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund

Since 1981, the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation has endowed millions of dollars in scholarships to students plan to major in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) field. The scholarship is the legacy of Austin E. Knowlton, community leader, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Bolton Scholarship

The Bolton Scholarship was named for Frances Payne Bolton who campaigned for the removal of restrictions at the School of Nursing, then Case Western Reserve University. It has a rich history of supporting disadvantaged students’ integration and success in the nursing profession.

This scholarship will be awarded to enrolled full-time nursing students who demonstrate financial hardship as indicated in their financial aid package. It covers unpaid tuition and reasonable educational expenses for students meeting the eligibility requirements.

Michelson-Morley STEM Scholarship

Named in honor of the historic experiment by Case School of Applied Science Professor Albert Michelson and Western Reserve College Professor Edward Morley, this scholarship is awarded to exceptional students who plan to major in a STEM field.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Cost and financial aid are major barriers for transfer students. To help Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members who are also transfer students, Case Western Reserve University awards up to $20,000 per year to these students.

In particular, this scholarship recognizes transfer students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and leadership achievement.

University Scholarship

Case Western Reserve University scholarships reward first-year applicants who demonstrate outstanding academic and personal achievement. These scholarships will be automatically renewed each semester, provided that the student meets the retention criteria established for their scholarship at the time of the initial award.

There are cases where freshmen are not considered for earlier scholarships. Should you fall into this category, no worries.

Case Western Reserve University offers other financial aid packages that are equally bountiful. If you win one of these scholarships, you can use it to offset your Case Western tuition. The good news is that some programs feature full-tuition awards, meaning that you’ll be able to attend college for free!

Naturally, it goes without saying that they’ll be more demanding than those scholarships with automatic consideration. Applicants will be required to submit additional documents, such as essays and family income information, as proof of eligibility. All programs are open yearly, and applications close on January 15.

Andrew and Eleanor Squire Scholarship

This four-year full-tuition scholarship was originally established by Case Western Reserve University trustee Andrew Squire and his wife Eleanor. Finalists will be invited to a required competition in March to determine the winners. Preference will be given to first-year applicants majoring in one of the following fields:

  • Accounting
  • Arts
  • Behavioral sciences
  • Humanities
  • Management
  • Natural sciences
  • Social sciences

Alexander A. Treuhaft Memorial Scholarship

This is a four-year, full-tuition scholarship, established by the Treuhaft Foundation in honor of Alexander A. Treuhaft. The Alexander A. Treuhaft Memorial Scholarship is open to first-year applicants in science and engineering.

Arts Achievement Scholarships

A small number of $10,000 scholarships are available to students who exhibit excellence in dance, music, studio art or theater, but who may not major in those subject areas.

First-year applicants interested in music should submit a video audition as part of the Arts Supplement through the Applicant Status Portal. On the other hand, those interested in dance, studio art or theater should contact individual departments to arrange an audition or portfolio review.

A.W. Smith Innovation Scholarship

Two scholarships in the amount of tuition are awarded to students who have shown exceptional achievement in hands-on engineering or science through a successful project. This scholarship is open to first-year applicants in engineering, the physical sciences, and mathematics.

Brian D. Sherwood Memorial Scholarship

This $2,500 award is open to nominees from Mundelein High School in Mundelein, Illinois. It is selected based on academic qualifications, extracurricular activities, community involvement, service commitment, recommendations from two faculty members, and an essay

Case Western Reserve University Leadership Scholarships

Ranging between $2,000 and $5,000, these scholarships are awarded to first-year applicants who display outstanding leadership in academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Douglas W. Nock Endowment Scholarship

The Douglas W. Nock Endowment Scholarship provides recognition and financial assistance to outstanding undergraduate students who have advanced the mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community at Case Western Reserve University or as a high school student in their community.

Each scholarship will be awarded for one academic year. Preference will be given to undergraduate students with a major in engineering, math, or science.

FIRST Scholarship

First-year applicants who are seniors in high school and participated at least one full season on a FIRST Robotics Competition or a FIRST Tech Challenge team can apply for one of two scholarships of $10,000. The award is renewable up to $40,000 over four years with a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).

Louis Stokes Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Scholarship

The Louis Stokes Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Scholarship is open to all applicants pursuing a degree focused on a career in the areas of internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics.

This full-tuition scholarship is renewable for up to five years. It also includes a grant of up to $2,500 for computer and book purchases, and assistance securing a paid summer internship.

National Merit Scholarship Program

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, students have to fulfill requirements to advance to finalist standing. Each semifinalist submits a detailed scholarship application, which includes essays and information about extracurricular achievements, awards, and leadership positions.

Semifinalists also have to have an outstanding academic record. Additionally, Competition finalists who declare Case Western Reserve University as their first choice and who have not received other National Merit or Corporate National Merit Scholarships will be considered.

Performing Arts Scholarships

A small number of full-tuition scholarships are available to students who exhibit excellence in the performing arts. Music majors should submit a video audition as part of the Arts Supplement through the Applicant Status Portal.

Meanwhile, theater or dance majors should contact individual departments to arrange an audition.

3 Community Scholarships for Cleveland and East Cleveland Students

Finally, Case Western Reserve makes several scholarship opportunities available to students in Cleveland and East Cleveland.

Provost Scholars Program

The Provost Scholars Program began as a partnership between Case Western Reserve University and East Cleveland City Schools. It aims to improve the academic outcomes of East Cleveland middle and high school students.

As recommended by the superintendent and staff, three groups of students, will be invited to participate in the program. Provost Scholars are required to reside in university housing.

Cleveland Scholars Program

Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CSMD) or East Cleveland City Schools students who are admitted to Case Western Reserve University as first-year students receive a four-year scholarship in the amount of tuition.

Students must have attended a CMSD or East Cleveland City School for their final two years of high school. Cleveland Scholars are required to reside in university housing for their first two years.

Joan C. Edwards Scholarship

The Joan C. Edwards Scholarship was created to encourage talented students from the public school system into the robust medical community of Cleveland. Each year, one graduate of CMSD has the opportunity to be selected as the Edwards Scholar.

Defining qualities of the Edwards Scholar are a genuine passion for the medical field, a commitment to academics, and financial need.

The scholarship award covers tuition, room, board, and other expenses of attendance during the course of the recipient’s undergraduate career at Case Western Reserve University, as well as their four years at the Case School of Medicine.
