Scholarships for international students in the UK are available for those who wish to study in the country. The United Kingdom, commonly known as the UK, is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and is a unitary parliamentary democracy ruled by Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state, and prime minister. The UK is the fifth-largest economy in the world and the second-largest economy in Europe after Germany, with 80% of its GDP coming from the services sector, particularly in the financial industry, with London being the largest financial center in the world. Each state within the UK has different policies, including within the education sector, where Wales teaches small groups of students in Welsh, Scottish universities have longer courses than universities in other states, and England has a tradition of independent schools and home education.

Commonwealth Scholarship

There are several scholarships available for international students to study in the UK. One such program is the Commonwealth Scholarships. The Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) to attract bright students from Commonwealth countries outside the UK to study in UK universities. The scholarship offers around 800 awards for programs annually.

The eligible countries for the scholarship are members of the Commonwealth countries outside the United Kingdom. The scholarship is offered for a full-time master’s program in the UK’s universities that young and talented students from low and middle-income Commonwealth countries are not financially able to study without support. The scholarship is provided for the development of science and technology, improvement of the healthcare system, global prosperity, strengthening global security in maintaining peace, resilience, and ability to respond in a crisis, access, inclusion, and opportunity. To apply for the scholarship, the participants must be permanent residents, citizens, or granted refugee status from eligible Commonwealth countries and must be unable to afford to study in the UK without financial support from the Commonwealth Scholarship. Applicants must first choose a university that has funding agreements with the Commonwealth Scholarship to see the list of UK universities. Each university on the list might have different requirements and a deadline for its admission process, so candidates are advised to check the additional requirements needed upon applying to their chosen university and master’s study program. The application for scholarship program should be applied online or through national nominating agencies from each respective Commonwealth country member. It is advised that applicants check with their national nominating agencies for any additional requirements needed for applying for the scholarship. The Commonwealth Scholarship institution does not accept any direct application or application submission outside the eligible admission process policy.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

Another scholarship program available for international students is the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. This scholarship program is for international students outside the UK, funded by the Bill and Melinda Foundation at Cambridge University. The foundation was established in 2000 by Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and his wife to tackle extreme poverty and health problems in developing countries. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides for full-time master and doctoral/Ph.D. programs at Cambridge University. Eligible applicants are international students from outside the United Kingdom who have leadership capability and potential, commit to improving the lives of others, and have the excellent intellectual ability, applying for full-time Ph.D. (three-year research degree program), MSc and Mitt (two-year research degree program), and a one-year postgraduate course. To apply, the applicants must submit their Gates Cambridge Statement, CV/Resume, research proposal for the Ph.D. program, and two reference letters for the admission process, which should be written by someone who has proper standing and understands the criteria needed for applying for the Gates Scholarship, such as a university professor or dean, superior in your working environment, or the head of your non-profit organization that understands your goals and objectives.
