1. AMS Senior Named Scholarships

All scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence; some have a particular focus appropriate to the named Honoree. In addition to the scholarship awarded, winners are invited to attend the AMS Annual Meeting with partial support in their senior year.

To be considered for the scholarships, you must:

2. AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science
AMS Graduate Fellowship in the History of Science is one of AMS scholarships and fellowships that awards a student who is currently completing a dissertation on the history of the atmospheric, oceanic, or hydrologic sciences.
The main goal of the program is to foster close working relations between historians and scientists. Furthermore, an effort will be made to place the student into a mentoring relationship.
The Award
The fellowship carries a $20,000 stipend. It supports one year of dissertation research.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must be graduate students in good standing proposing to complete a dissertation as described above. Also, they must be pursuing a degree at a U.S. institution.

3. The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Award in Meteorology
The award is sponsored by the American Meteorological Society to honor the late Rev. James B. Macelwane, S.J., a world-renowned authority of seismology who was a geophysicist and Dean of the Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University until he died in 1956.
The purpose of this award is to stimulate interest in meteorology among college students through the submission of original student papers concerned with some phases of the atmospheric sciences.
The Award
The recipient of the Father James B. Macelwane Award will receive a stipend of $1,000 supported by member donations to the AMS Giving Program.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the award, applicants must be enrolled as undergraduate students at the time the paper is written. Also, no more than two students from any institution may enter their papers in the contest.
How to Apply
To consider papers for the Macelwane Award, you must submit the following:
- A PDF copy of the original paper
- An abstract of no more than 250 words
- A letter of application
- A letter from the department head or other faculty member of the department, confirming that the author was an undergraduate student at the time the paper was written, and indicating the elements of the paper that represent original contributions by the student
- A Student Assessment form that is completed by the department head or other faculty member of the department

4. Women in Science Scholarship
The Women in Science Scholarship is one of the AMS scholarships and fellowships targeted specifically for female students. It supports women in the atmospheric, oceanic, and climate sciences, and related areas of study. The scholarship was established to acknowledge that gender diversity is essential in the pursuit of better science.
The Award
The scholarship carries a $10,000 stipend.

The program helps these first-year graduate students to be educated about unique challenges facing the world so that they may better tackle real-world issues after graduation.
The Award
A stipend is presented to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period in the academic year. In addition, fellowship recipients can receive partial travel support to attend the AMS Annual Meeting. However, stipend amounts may vary.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to apply for a fellowship, applicants must:
- Be entering their first year of graduate school in the Fall of 2021
- Be pursuing a degree in the atmospheric or related sciences at a U.S. accredited institution
- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0-point scale
- Be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status

Applicants must complete all sections of the application and upload all required supporting documents. With the completed application should be three written references and relevant official transcripts.
6. AMS Freshmen Undergraduate Scholarship
AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship program is open to all high school students and designed to encourage study in the atmospheric and related sciences.
Serving as a unique example of various sectors of our field joining together to support young, talented minds, the AMS scholarships and fellowships are sponsored by partners in industry, as well as through named scholarships.
The Award
The scholarship stipend is $5,000, awarding $2,500 each year (for the freshman and sophomore years). The second-year funding is dependent on the successful completion of the first year.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:
- Be entering your freshman year of college in the Fall of 2021 as a full-time student
- Plan to pursue a degree in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences
- Have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold permanent resident status
Students eligible to apply for this scholarship may also apply to the AMS Minority Scholarship Program if all requirements are met but can only accept one scholarship if selected for both.

7. AMS Minority Scholarships
AMS Minority Scholarships are AMS scholarships and fellowships aimed specifically at minority students.
It awards funding to minority students who have been traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Funding for the scholarships is provided through donations made to the AMS Annual Giving Program.
The Award
The $6,000 two-year scholarship is for $3,000 per year during freshman and sophomore years (second-year funding depends on successful completion of the first academic year).
Eligibility Requirements
First of all, applicants must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status. Minority students who will be entering their freshman year of college in the Fall of 2021 are eligible to apply.
Also, they must plan to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Additionally, they must have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Students eligible to apply for the AMS Minority Scholarship Program may also apply to the AMS Freshman Scholarship Program but can only accept one scholarship if selected for both.
