Founded in 1874, the Colorado School of Mines, or also simply known as Mines, is a public research university in Golden, Colorado. It offers undergraduate and graduates degrees in engineering, science, and mathematics, with a focus on energy and the environment.
While Mines does offer minor degrees in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, the school only offers major degrees in STEM fields. Although the school has been co-educational since its founding, enrollment remains predominantly male as of Fall 2020.

The following is a partial list of Mines scholarships available for both undergraduate and graduate students, specifically for petroleum engineering students:
1. Joseph King McMahon Petroleum Engineering Scholarship
The Joseph King McMahon Petroleum Engineering Scholarship was established in 2006. The purpose of the scholarship is to aid students who are interested in pursuing the study of petroleum engineering.
It is hoped that the recipient of this scholarship will someday be in a position to give back to the petroleum industry and encourage others to pursue this field.
The Award
Successful candidates will receive a scholarship of $3,000.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Joseph King McMahon Petroleum Engineering Scholarship, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better
- Be majoring in Petroleum Engineering and classified as a sophomore or higher when completing
- Demonstrate leadership abilities and involvement in student and community organizations
- Be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 15 hours) for the duration of the scholarship

2. Colorado Environmental Management Society Scholarship
The Colorado Environmental Management Society (CEMS) is a non-profit organization created in 1985 to provide a forum for the exchange of information concerning technologies, laws and regulations, and other current environmental issues.
Through this program, CEMS aims to provide a mechanism for the professional enhancement of its members for environmental and health and safety (EHS) management.
The Award
CEMS plans to award up to three scholarships: One for an undergraduate, one for a graduate (Master’s or Doctoral) student, and one for a law student. Usually, the awarded amount is up to $2,500 per scholarship.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for these Mines scholarships, students must:
- Be currently enrolled in and attending an undergraduate or graduate program at Mines
- Intend to work in an environmental field
- Be studying engineering, geology, environmental sciences, law, or another field in which they may address environmental issues

3. GPA Midstream Scholarships
The GPA Midstream Association has been engaged in shaping the midstream sector of the U.S. energy industry since 1921. Its mission is to responsibly serve and represent the midstream energy industry through collaborative expertise, safety, and advocacy from its member companies and staff, focused on sustainability, to the benefit of all.
GPA Midstream regularly awards scholarships, especially for Mines students, to further their studies. The association hopes the award will help those in need to keep going further.
The Award
The GPA Midstream Association awards scholarships of up to over $5,000 to successful candidates. In addition, top award winners will also receive a copy of GPSA data books on a flash drive.
Eligibility Requirements
Students are required to meet the following criteria to qualify for the Mines scholarships awarded by GPA Midstream Association:
- Candidates have demonstrated a strong interest in the oil and gas processing industry.
- Currently, they are pursuing an engineering degree and maintaining a 2.8 or better Grade Point Average (4.0 scale).
- They have achieved junior or senior status as an undergraduate or are currently enrolled in a graduate program.
- Candidates are U.S. or Canadian citizens.

4. SPE Wyoming Section Scholarship
Each year, the Wyoming Petroleum Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers gives out thousands of dollars to worthy applicants from around the Rocky Mountain Region.
The organization looks for undergraduate students who excel both academically and socially, have an interest in the petroleum industry, are involved with extracurricular activities, and are eager to contribute to the petroleum industry. Thus, if you think you’re the best fit for this scholarship, then you should apply for it.
The Award
Yearly, the Society of Petroleum Engineers generously gives out thousands of dollars to worthy applicants.
Eligibility Requirements
The eligibility criteria of the program are:
- Applicants must be high school seniors intending to pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering or a petroleum-related field or college students currently enrolled in Petroleum Engineering at Mines.
- They demonstrate good academic reports.
- Applicants must be interested in the petroleum industry.

5. Shell Scholarships

Each year, Shell offers two types of scholarships:
- The Shell Technical Scholarship is for full-time students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a specific technical major.
- The Shell Incentive Fund is for full-time students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a specific technical major and who belong to particular under-represented minority groups.
The Award
Annually, each Shell scholarship awards $5,000 to eligible applicants.

6. ExxonMobil LOFT Fellowship
ExxonMobil Corporation, the largest publicly traded international energy company, has partnered with the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) to create fellowship opportunities in the STEM fields for Hispanic college students.
Selected students will be exposed to a top-quality company by participating in this signature mentoring program. Each student will be paired up with an ExxonMobil engineer or scientist to learn how their knowledge and skills are applied in a corporate setting.
The Award
Successful applicants will receive $1,000 of educational grants. Additionally, there exists the possibility to interview for ExxonMobil positions upon successful completion of the fellowship.
Eligibility Requirements
This opportunity is highly competitive and open to rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students attending the Colorado School of Mines. In addition, candidates must:
- Be majoring in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Geoscience, Material Science and Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
- Plan to pursue a career in the fields/majors listed above
- Have a GPA of 3.5 and above
- Be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents of the United States
- Identify as Hispanic

7. NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program
The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education.
It supports individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, analysis, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.
This highly competitive program aims to identify the most talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to education.
The Award
Up to $27,500 fellowship stipend is awarded every year.
Eligibility Requirements
The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program is open to all eligible applicants regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation. However, its basic selection criteria are as follows:
- Importance of the research question to education
- Quality of the research approach and feasibility of the work plan
- Applicant’s future potential as a researcher and interest in educational research
Applicants need not be citizens of the United States. They must, however, be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States.

8. Don Schroeder Scholarship
The Don Schroeder Scholarship is one of Mines scholarships sponsored by PSIG that provides financial assistance in research related to pipeline simulation.
The scholarship is named after Don Schroeder, a pioneer in the area of pipeline simulation, in recognition of his tremendous contribution to PSIG over many years. It is awarded to deserving students conducting studies and/or research in the field of pipeline simulation.
The Award
Scholarships of $5,000 will be awarded to outstanding individuals.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be enrolled in a doctoral or master’s graduate degree program with research related to pipeline simulation. In addition, students must demonstrate a capability to deliver results along with a financial need.

9. SPE Scholarships
To encourage the pursuit of careers in the Oil and Gas Industry, the Fort Worth Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers is excited to offer scholarships for students that are either entering their freshman year of college or are undergraduate students already in college.
The Award
Undergraduate Mines scholarships of up to $3,000 per year are awarded annually and (once awarded) may be renewed through the recipient’s senior year in college (up to $12,000 in total).
Eligibility Requirements
Scholarships are contingent on the student:
- Enrolling in and maintaining a full-time status in a curriculum leading to a degree in Petroleum Engineering or related program that will lead to a career in the oil and gas industry.
- Achieving a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for each semester.
In addition, applicants must be United States citizens or lawful permanent residents.

10. SPE Foundation Donald G Russell Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to support and promote undergraduate Petroleum Engineering Students attending the Colorado School of Mines. This scholarship will be awarded to those who have shown a clear pursuit of Petroleum Engineering and need help to ensure their studies can be completed.
The Award
Each year, two recipients will be awarded a one-time payment of $4,000 to help them complete their studies.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be current SPE Student Members in good standing
- Comply with SPE sanction policy
- Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate Petroleum Engineering degree
- Be U.S. residents
