About the Flinn Scholarship

Twenty outstanding seniors from high schools around Arizona are given the opportunity to receive the Flinn Scholarship, a competitive merit-based scholarship, each year.

It offers a full ride at a state institution in Arizona for four years, including room and board, a stipend for an internship, and guidance from professors and alums.

The scholarship has been awarded since 1986. The Flinn Foundation, a private, non-profit charitable endowment founded in 1965 by Dr. and Mrs. Robert S. Flinn to enhance the quality of life in Arizona, funds and manages the program’s scholarship awards.

The Flinn Foundation sees Flinn Scholars as the state of Arizona’s future corporate executives, researchers, artists, educators, and other public and private sector leaders.

Additionally, the Flinn Foundation funds the Flinn Scholarship as well as the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership, arts and culture, and the growth of biosciences in Arizona.

Program Benefits

The Flinn Scholarship not only pays for the vast majority of a student’s undergraduate education, but also provides programming and support that lasts much beyond a student’s formal education and into their professional and personal lives.

The Flinn Scholarship benefits include:

  • The full cost of tuition and mandatory fees, plus housing and meals, valued at more than $130,000;
  • Funding for an international summer seminar after the Scholar’s freshman year and for at least one additional study-abroad experience;
  • Participation in an extraordinary community of nearly 700 current and alumni Flinn Scholars;
  • Membership in a university honors college, with amenities including small classes, access to top researchers, and guest lectures;
  • Personal mentoring from top faculty and exposure to Arizona and global leaders in business, government, science, and the arts at exclusive events;
  • Intellectual, cultural, and social activities developed exclusively for Flinn Scholars by both the Flinn Foundation and the universities; and
  • Graduating without debt.

In summary, the Flinn Scholarship offers the type of stimulating, intellectually demanding atmosphere that some students believe is only to be found at the nation’s most elite universities, thereby broadening the Scholar’s life and career opportunities.

The Flinn Foundation also regularly connects Scholars with influential members of the corporate, government, and community sectors and helps them discover opportunities for professional advancement.

It is possible that some candidates who fall just short of the aforementioned criteria will nonetheless be chosen as Flinn Scholars. The reality is, however, that this kind of thing seldom happens. The vast majority of candidates every year are perfect fits.

For instance, the average GPA and class rank of the Flinn Scholarship winners 2022 was 3.96 and 2%, respectively (for those who attended schools that reported class rank).

The Flinn Scholarship Application

The Flinn Scholarship timeline is divided into two processes: online application and interview.

Online Application

The online application is comprised of:

  • Forms that collect biographical and family data and information about current studies, extracurricular activities, and employment;
  • Three essay prompts and five short-answer questions;
  • Two teacher recommendations, submitted separately by teachers;
  • A report from high school’s academic counselor, submitted separately by the counselor; and
  • A copy of transcript, uploaded by the counselor.

Interviews

The semi-finalist interviews, which involve around 80 candidates, occur in early January. In late February or early March, around 40 finalists are interviewed.

Scholar-designates and alternates are normally contacted within a week after the finalist interviews. The selected Scholars will have until mid-April to accept or refuse the award. The new Flinn Scholars are announced publicly by the Flinn Foundation in late April.

Make an impression during interviews by demonstrating genuine interest and enthusiasm for the program. Your career, achievements, and the concepts mentioned in your application essays will all be fair game for the Flinn Scholarship interview questions.

The selection panel will prioritize candidates who demonstrate genuine interest and enthusiasm for the position.
