Law, or legal studies, comes into contact with almost every area of human life, touching upon issues relating to business, economics, politics, the environment, human rights, international relations and trade. As one of the most popular studies in higher education, law degrees are offered in many higher institutions around the world, starting from the bachelor’s degrees to doctoral degrees.
If you are interested in examining and understanding different societies and cultures, and want to specialize in legal careers, a law degree might be just right for you! Law degrees are useful to prepare not only for specific legal careers, but for a broad range of professional roles – and indeed, for life in general.
For your further understanding, we have provided you with an overview about law degrees and what you will learn within it. We have also given you a list of scholarships for law students that you may be eligible for if you wish to study abroad.
Introducing Law Studies
Law degrees have always been one of the most sought-after and widely respected courses to study at university. For many, a law degree is the first step along the path to a career in the legal sector, often followed by the further study and training needed to become a practicing solicitor or barrister.
There are many different types of law degrees available, varying according to where you study. In most countries, law degrees take the form of an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) which allows you to go on to take the national Bar or Law Society qualifying examinations, in order to becoming a practicing lawyer. In some countries, a BA in Law (BL) or a BSc in Law is in place instead. Often these alternative names are used interchangeably. However, some universities differentiate between LLB an BA Law programs, with the former focusing exclusively on law and the latter allowing students to take course modules in other subjects, with a focus on humanities.
A Juris Doctor (JD).is offered in the US, Japan, Canada, Australia and Hong Kong. In such countries, legal studies are focused at graduate level (after completion of a bachelor’s degree in a different discipline) with students earning their JD in order to practice. Typically, the JD will take three years to complete. There is also an option to earn a one year Master of Laws (LLM) degree in an area of specialization (such as tax law) after earning a JD.
While most LLM and JD programs are primarily aimed at preparing students for legal careers, it’s also possible to take graduate-level law degrees with a greater focus on academic research. These may be referred to either a PhD in Law, Doctor of Laws, or Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD).
A law degree is an advanced degree; only students who hold bachelor’s degrees are accepted into law school programs. the field of law cuts across a broad range of areas that often overlap. These are some common areas of specialty in law studies:
- Criminal law: Graduates of criminal law can become defense lawyers who also serve as judges and magistrates when necessary. Defense lawyers generally work in private practice or as public defenders. Public defenders are lawyers paid by the government to defend those who cannot afford a lawyer.
- Environmental law: Environmental lawyers can work for organizations that are trying to protect natural resources and for companies who might be charged with abusing natural resources or violating laws that protect them. Both sides also have interests in affecting the laws that govern the use of natural resources.
- International law: Lawyers who work in international law must have knowledge and skills in areas that involve international relations, trade and commerce, and governments. They must have a thorough understanding of the laws of other countries. Many of these lawyers are employed by multinational companies that have business relations with other countries.
- Underprivileged legal services: These lawyers protect those in society who cannot afford legal representation or may be otherwise disadvantaged. Many special-interest organizations have been established to help these citizens in need. Some lawyers may work for a specific organization, while others may be employed full-time and donate their time to worthy causes. Often this work is done pro bono (for free).
- Patent law: Attorneys who specialize in patent law seek to prevent people from profiting from the ideas and products that have been developed by others. It is a complicated specialty that requires some educational background in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
- Corporate / labor law: These attorneys work for corporations and might specialize in labor negotiations, tax law, investment, or other areas.
- Tax law: Tax lawyers are required to make certain that the company they work for is operating legally before making a tax decision. Many tax lawyers own private practices that serve a variety of clients.
