Maria Trochimezuk founded the IOS Scholarships portal to aid students from underrepresented groups in finding financial aid. Its primary objective is to increase the number of students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Scholarships are only one part of the IOS Scholarships package. Free scholarship organizers and financial education material on money-saving ideas, coupons, and related scholarship tips are included. IOS Scholarships offers a wide range of scholarships, and we will be highlighting some of the best in this post.
Without further ado, let us get started:
1. S-STEM Scholarship
Award Amount: $10,000
Closing Date: July 15, 2022
This scholarship is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The S-STEM Scholarship is designed to support full-time students majoring in any of the following content areas:
- Bioinformatics
- Biotechnology
- Computer Science
- Life Sciences
- Engineering
- Environmental Science
- Information Technology
- Physical Sciences
- Mathematics
It will be awarded for up to two years. New and current students are eligible to apply. To qualify, students must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or an eligible non-citizen
- Have financial need (as defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education criteria for Federal Financial Aid)
- Maintain full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
- Have at least a 3.0 GPA
- Agree to participate in a one credit seminar, which would include an undergraduate research component, and participate in scholarship program activities
2. AIChE Minority Scholarship Award
Award Amount: $1,000
Closing Date: July 15, 2022
The AIChE Minority Scholarship Award is presented to selected AIChE undergraduate student members annually. It is funded by the Henry T. & Melinda C. Brown Endownment for the Education of Underrepresented Minority Chemical Engineers.
Applicants must be undergraduates in chemical engineering during the current academic year and members of a minority group that is underrepresented in chemical engineering, i.e., African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islander.
Selection of winners will be based on the following criteria:
- Academic record, minimum GPA of 3.0
- Participation in AIChE student chapter, or professional or civic activities
- Career objectives and plans as outlined in the career essay
3. HBCU Scholars Empowerment Program
Award Amount: $5,000
Closing Date: July 11, 2022
Daughters of Charity Inc., in partnership with UNCF, created the HBCU Scholars Empowerment Program to assist Black/African American students receiving four-year degrees at Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) or Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
To apply, students must:
- Be a Black/African American student admitted to or enrolled as a full-time college freshman at an accredited U.S. located, four-year, PBI or HBCU in the recent academic year
- Have a minimum 2.5 GPA or show completion of a GED
- Complete a Free Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA) form
- Have a demonstrated, unmet financial need as verified by their colleges or universities
4. Thiel Fellowship
Award Amount: $100,000
Closing Date: December 1, 2022
The Thiel Fellowship, originally named 20 under 20, is a fellowship created by billionaire Peter Thiel through the Thiel Foundation. The fellowship is intended for students aged 22 or younger.
It offers guidance and other resources to drop out of school and pursue other work, which could involve scientific research, creating a startup, or working on a social movement. Selection for the fellowship is through a competitive annual process.
Students are allowed to apply to the fellowship if they are still in school. However, they will need to drop out in order to accept the fellowship if they are selected.
5. Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship
Award Amount: $5,000
Closing Date: N/A
The Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship was established in 1999 through the generous support of the Y.S. Lee Family Endowed Fellowship Fund. This fellowship provides graduate students with financial assistance to pursue degrees in China-related studies.
Recipients must be full-time graduate students or have been accepted for full-time graduate study in any field of Chinese studies. The fellowship is open to U.S. and international students.
6. NSHSS Innovation in Technology Scholarship
Award Amount: $2,000
Closing Date: September 30, 2022
Technology is everywhere in today’s society. Whether it be behind the scenes with coding and software programming, or easily demonstrated through AI and robotics, technology can be an asset and sometimes a liability or distraction.
NSHSS wishes to honor all students devoted to technology to tell the foundation about their passions for the field. To be considered for these IOS Scholarships, students must:
- Be high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores, or juniors
- Have a dedicated passion for AI, technology, coding, and more
7. The Explore More Scholarship
Award Amount: $10,000
Closing Date: N/A
The Explore More Scholarship offers students a huge award that can help launch students into an exciting career in STEM. This scholarship is available to new incoming freshmen students, resident and nonresident, and transfer students from community colleges who are starting their first semester at the University of Utah.
Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on their most recent academic transcript. Additionally, they must have a strong background in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Moreover, participation in leadership and extracurricular activities is also a consideration.
8. Kanders Churchill Scholarship
Award Amount: $60,000
Closing Date: October 7, 2022
The Kanders Churchill Scholarship in Science Policy offers a fully funded 1-year master’s in public policy in Churchill College at the University of Cambridge. Founded in 2017 by the Winston Churchill Foundation of the U.S., the award was created to address the growing divide between science and science policy.
It is a life-changing opportunity for STEM students to earn a fully funded master’s degree at one of the world’s leading institutions of higher education. These IOS Scholarships help launch applicants to all major of STEM-related careers, whether in science policy, research, clinical healthcare, and more.
To apply, applicants must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in STEM, whether as a major or minor
- Be U.S. citizens who are seniors when they apply or have graduated from any U.S. institution
There is no application for the scholarship itself. In the application to Cambridge, applicants indicate they are interested in being considered for the Kanders Churchill Scholarship.
9. Matthew Tobin Cappetta Archaeological Scholarship
Award Amount: $2,500
Closing Date: October 1, 2022
Matthew Tobin Cappetta Archaeological Scholarship provides funding for graduate students studying archaeology or ethnoarchaeology of the American Southwest and the South American Andes.
The scholarship covers tuition, course fees, and books or course materials for graduate-level classroom and field-based courses in anthropology. It also supports travel to attend field schools or directed study projects that lead to research papers, reports, journal articles, or advanced field research.
To apply, applicants must:
- Be enrolled to a graduate program in an accredited university
- Conduct advanced study of the archaeology or ethnoarchaeology of the U.S. Southwest and the South American Andes
- Have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
10. ACS Younger Chemists Committee Leadership Development Award
Award Amount: Varies
Closing Date: November 1, 2022
The Young Chemist Leadership Development Workshop at the ACS Leadership Development Institute will be supported by this fellowship. The program aims to help young chemists become leaders in society and in their chosen fields of work.
The award is intended for young scientists that meet these minimum requirements:
- Under the age of 35 years of age at the time of application
- Current graduate student, post-doc, or within the first seven years of a professional career
- Current ACS member
- Have not received a prior award under this program
