Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Scholarships Calls for Application

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is proud to announce the launch of UKM Vice Chancellor Gold and Silver Scholarships. These scholarships are available to potential local and international students who will (by research) enroll as full-time Masters and Philosophy Doctor students. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Scholarships: An Overview

Vice-Chancellor Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Scholarships are being provided to recruit prospective students to pursue Masters and Doctoral degrees locally and abroad. They grant two types of scholarships: Gold and Silver Scholarships for UKM Vice-Chancellor, respectively. The application for these scholarships is open to all aspiring local and foreign postgraduate students who have excellent records of academic performance to pursue their studies at UKM.

Both applications for scholarships are accessible to prospective full-time postgraduate students who wish to enter in full research or mixed modes, with the proportion of min research:coursework 70:30. The program application is available to new aspiring UKM students who have enrolled online.

To qualify for the scholarships, applicants should not obtain assistance/stipends from any sponsor/federal/state or other legislative bodies. In addition, applicants are not eligible to receive any wage, pension or other payment from any agency or company.

Qualified recipients of the scholarship must achieve good performance quality in the postgraduate studies. If the recipient fails to meet the prescribed Key Performance Index (KPI), then the scholarship grant or any other decision as decided by the selection committee can be revoked.

Selected Gold Vice-Chancellor’s Award scholarship recipients are eligible for:

  • Waived tuition (every semester), registration (one-time), service and activities (including thesis and convocation) fees
  • Living allowance of RM3,200.00 per month for PhD and RM2,200.00 for Masters
  • Accommodation allowance of RM300.00 per month
  • One roundtrip flight ticket (economy class) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) from home country and to home country from KLIA for International, Sabahan and Sarawakian candidates
  • Cost of visa throughout postgraduate studies (for International students only)

Meanwhile, the chosen Silver Vice-Chancellor’s Award scholarship winner is entitled to:

  • Waived registration (one-time) and tuition (every semester) fees
  • Living allowance of RM2,000.00 per month for PhD and RM1,500.00 for Masters candidates
  • Accommodation allowance of RM300.00 per month

The typical period for scholarship acceptance is as follows:

  1. Doctor of Philosophy of research mode – six (6) semesters;
  2. Doctor of Philosophy of mixed mode – six (6) semesters;
  3. Master of research mode – four (4) semesters;
  4. Master of mixed mode – two (2) semesters or within the period prescribed by the program of

Nonetheless, a semester application for a scholarship can be accepted by the Selection Committee.

As recipients of these scholarships, students must comply to certain terms and conditions that have been applied. Some of them are stated as follows.

  • The study must be given full attention to the receivers. The applicant is not allowed to do any things that may impact his or her education.
  • Claimants of a scholarship are bound from now and then to University Rules and Regulations and other laws in place at UKM.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be qualified for the Gold Vice-Chancellor Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Scholarships, an applicant must be exceptional local and international students, depending on the decision of the Vice-Chancellor of UKM or of outstanding local and international students chosen by the Selection Committee who meet the following criteria.

  • Applicant ought to be registered as fulltime postgraduate student by Research or Mixed Mode.
  • For MSc applicant, candidates must have obtained Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction CGPA of at least 3.67 or a First Class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a reputable university and must show credibility as a scholar.
  • For PhD applicant, candidates must have obtained Master’s degree or equivalent from a reputable university, must have published at least two (2) articles in Q2 journal and above as first student author.

On the other hand, in order to be considered for the Silver Vice-Chancellor Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Scholarships, an applicant must be chosen by the Selection Committee as the outstanding local and foreign students who meet the requirements below.

  • Applicant ought to be registered as fulltime postgraduate student by Research or Mixed Mode (research: coursework ratio 70:30).
  • For MSc applicant, candidates must have obtained Bachelor’s Degree with Distinction CGPA of at least of 3.67 or a First Class Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent from a reputable university AND must show credibility as a scholar.
  • For PhD applicant, candidates must have obtained Master’s degree or equivalent from a reputable university; MUST have published at least TWO (2) articles in Q3 journal and above as first student author.

Achievement Evaluation of the performance of Gold and Silver Vice-Chancellor will take place during the term of study (yearly) and if the beneficiary does not meet the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) provided that the scholarship or any other decision as decided by the Selection Committee may be withdrawn.

The annual KPI of the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Scholarship Recipients

  • Master’s KPI: Published one (1) article in journal Q2 and above as first student author.
  • Doctor of Philosophy’s KPI: Published two (2) articles in journal Q2 and above as first student author.

The annual KPI of the Vice-Chancellor’s Silver Scholarship Recipients

  • Master’s KPI: Published one (1) article in journal Q3 and above as first student author.
  • Doctor of Philosophy’s KPI: Published two (2) articles in journal Q3 and above as first student author.

How to Apply

Applicants must download and complete the application form from the website of the UKM Graduate Centre. The application form should be e-mailed to graduate@ukm.edu.my along with the necessary supporting documents. Incomplete applications are deemed unsuccessful and are notified to the applicant. Both qualifications are reviewed by the Selection Committee of the University. Successful or unsuccessful applications will be notified.
