Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program was launched by the Canadian Government to help Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students. Valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies, the scholarships will be given considering three equally weighted section criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership. These scholarships are aimed at Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign students who wish to study in doctoral level with one of the following areas of research:

  • Health research
  • Natural sciences and/or engineering research
  • Social sciences and humanities research

Up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually, although the numbers are subject to change depending on the available amount of funds. Should more funds become more available, additional scholarships may be awarded.

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota (i.e., a predetermined number of applications that can be put forward to the national competition) to host Vanier scholars. Candidates should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study.

For more information, visit the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships’ website.

Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS)

The Ontario Trillium Scholarship program was announced by the Ontario government as a significant initiative to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for PhD studies. The OTS are to be awarded to international PhD recipients for a maximum of four years. Each OTS is valued at $40,000 annually (about $26,000 from the Ontario Government and about $13,000 from the University / Faculty / department / supervisor). These scholarships are to be automatically awarded to the student for each of the three years following the first year provided the student maintains good academic standing and continues to meet recipient eligibility requirements.

Each Faculty will nominate up to 5 students in the Winter term for admission in the following Spring, Fall or Winter terms. Funding for this program is contingent upon annual confirmation of support from the provincial government.

Recipients of the OTS must be international students, who hold a valid Canadian study permit and must be intending to pursue full-time graduate studies at the doctoral level in a degree granting program.

Further details can be found on the OTS’ website.
