3 Scholarships in Poland for International Students

  1. The Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme

The Ignacy Łukasiewicz Scholarship Programme is a joint initiative of the inistry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (Polish: Narodowa Agencja Wymiany Akademickiej – NAWA) within the framework of Polish Development Assistance. The programme aims to support the socio-economic growth of developing countries (excluding European and Central Asian countries) by increasing the level of knowledge and education of their citizens. Only citizens of the following participating countries are eligible for this scholarship: Angola, Colombia, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Myanmar, Nigeria, Palestine, Peru, The Republic of South Africa, The Philippines, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Vietnam.

The scholarship covers tuition fees for Master’s degree studies at public universities in Poland that are supervised by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The scholarship is available for Master’s programmes in the following fields of study: engineering and technical sciences, agricultural sciences, sciences and natural sciences.

The scholarship also covers preparatory courses, which is required to facilitate undertaking studies in Poland. The preparatory course is intended to teach scholarship holders the Polish language, familiarizing them with Polish culture and introducing them to subjects related to the course of their future studies at the Polish university. Students who decide to study in English can take the preparatory course for only one semester.

  1. Stefan Banach Scholarship Programme

The Stefan Banach Scholarship Programme aims to support the socio-economic growth of developing countries by improving the knowledge and education of the citizens of Eastern Partnership, Central Asian and Western Balkan countries. The programme is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA), implemented as part of the Polish development assistance programme.

The scholarship is addressed to students who are citizens of the countries identified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as having priority status for the programme: Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Serbia.

Recipients of this scholarship will be given the opportunity to pursue second-cycle studies in the full-time mode in Polish in one of the following fields of study: engineering and technical, agricultural, applied ad life sciences. The scholarship will only be available for studies at public universities subordinate to the Minister of Science and Higher Education, benefiting from an exemption from university fees and a monthly scholarship from NAWA to cover living expenses in the statutory period of studying in Poland.

The programme also covers an obligatory one-month language and adaptation course with a scholarship or a one-year preparatory course with a scholarship, preceding the studies in Poland. These courses are intended to improve the participants’ knowledge of the Polish language and the subjects related to the courses of their future studies at a Polish university.

Candidates shall be qualified under the competition procedure, based on the results of an interview conducted by an Evaluation Committee appointed by the Director of NAWA, composed of the academic researchers representing Polish higher education institutions. The candidates themselves may select the university and the field of study, based on the educational offer of Polish public higher education institutions.   1. The Ulam Programme

The Ulam Programme is introduced by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) in terms of Article 19(1) of the Act of 7 July 2017 on the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (Dz.U. [Journal of Laws] of 11 August 2017, item 1530, as amended). The Ulam Programme aims to increase the internationalization of Polish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and scientific institutions. The programme allows both recognized and promising scientists with at least a doctoral degree, to visit Poland in order to strengthen the scientific potential of Polish entities and to participate in their scientific activities, primarily research projects and didactics. The programme welcomes scientists from around the world, representing any field of science to the Polish institutions of science and higher education. Through this programme, the Polish HEIs, scientific and research institutions will have the opportunity to invite specialists from their priority areas to Poland. These specialists will make a significant contribution to the research conducted by a given institution, strengthen didactics or support the institution in applying for prestigious grants.

The programme will facilitate a gradual increase in the number of foreign scientists involved in scientific research and teaching in Poland and also enable or deepen international contacts with foreign institutions.

Foreign scientists may stay in Poland for 6 to 24 months, and they may be accompanied by members of their closest family and, in the case a participant is a disabled person, by their assistant.

Scientists visiting Polish scientific institutions under the Ulam Programme will receive a monthly stipend for the duration of their stay. Travel costs will also be covered.

The application must be submitted by an individual scientist who holds a doctoral degree awarded in any country other than Poland. Applicants should not be a Polish citizen and has not lived, worked and/or studied in Poland since at least 2017. The condition of not being a Polish citizen does not apply to persons who are Polish citizens and whose full cycle of doctoral studies has been financed by the Polish government, as these persons are entitled to participate in the programme.
