About the SOAR Scholarship for College Students

The SOAR Scholarship for College Students, or also known as the Shuhua University Scholarship, is aimed at students who have won the Shuhua High School Scholarship in high school and have been admitted to a university or vocational university.

The higher education institutions that the student attends must be public universities or public higher vocational institutes approved by the provincial department of education, the central ministerial level, or the ministry of education.

The scholarship is provided by the SOAR Foundation. A group of volunteers in the San Francisco Bay Area who were passionate about education in China created the foundation in 1995.

China has made significant progress in achieving universal access to education since the “Reform and Opening.” More people are now literate than 96%. Furthermore, the standard is a nine-year compulsory education.

As a result, high school and university enrollment increased dramatically, reaching 86.5% and 37.5%, respectively, in 2014—numerically not far behind the 95% and 40% rates for the same year in the United States.

However, rural residents do not always have access to resources and opportunities. According to a 2016 research, more than 50% of middle school graduates from farming towns with extremely low incomes did not finish high school.

It is anticipated that by establishing the foundation, it will benefit numerous aspects of education. Since its inception, more than four thousand businesses and individuals have contributed to the SOAR Scholarship Programs.

All in all, the SOAR Scholarship for College Students is a seed that may not only improve the lives of the beneficiaries and their families but also advance civil rights in society.
