- have a combined federal adjusted gross income of 110,000 or less for the 2018-2019 academic year;
- be pursuing an undergraduate degree at CUNY;
- be enrolled in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits each year (successively), applicable toward his or her degree program;
- if attended college prior to the 2018-19 academic year, have earned at least 30 credits each year (successively), applicable toward his or her degree program prior to applying for an Excelsior Scholarship;
- be in a non-default status on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or on the repayment of any NYS award;
- be in compliance with the terms of the service condition(s) imposed by a NYS award that you have previously received; and
- execute a Contract agreeing to reside in NYS for the length of time the award was received, and, if employed during such time, be employed in NYS.
14. Are there any other requirements that one must meet after completing the degree?
Yes. You will live in the State of New York for the number of years equal to the awards you have won. For example, if you earned four Excelsior Scholarship awards when attaining your bachelor’s degree, you have to spend four years after college in New York state. Additionally, you have to live in New York State if you are working during those years. If you fail to meet those conditions, the grant will be transformed to a loan.
15. How do I apply?
Visit the Higher Education Services Corporation website to submit the application. Students who have been previously approved for an Excelsior Scholarship – regardless of whether or not they received funds – do not need to reapply for the 2020-2021 year. Once they complete their 2020-2021 FAFSA and TAP applications their Excelsior Application will be automatically renewed.
16. Do you have to pay back the Excelsior Scholarship?
