About the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award
The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award is one of the awards that are provided to international students as part of the University of British Columbia scholarship programme. The award is based on the students’ capabilities within their academic fields, their leadership abilities, their commitment to the student body and local communities, as well as other personal achievements that have left a massive positive impact towards the people living around them. These achievements can be in the form of many endeavors, such as sports, creative writing, academia, performing arts, and the likes of it.
Please be noted the the KMILOT Award is provided within a limited number. One highschool/university/college can only nominate up to a maximum of two individuals for this programme. The two selected students will then be differentiated nearing the start of their studies: one students will be based in the UBC Okanagan campups, and the other student will be nominated for the Donald Wehrung International Student Award at any of the UBC campuses. As a need-and-merit-based award, all future candidates must be able to prove themselves worth of this scholarship through their tedious efforts and hard work.
Programme Value
The KMILOT Award provides an abundance of scholarship benefits towards all of its selected grantees. Successful scholarship recipients will be entitled to an award-level financial funding that is on par with their economic needs. The amount of the scholarship itself will be based on the total expenses of their tuition, student fees, living expenses, as well as the other costs that have anything to do with the University of British Columbia. The way this works is that the committee will assess your financial background, and from there on, the committee will be able to determine how much funding these selected students will be entitled to get.
As an additional info, it is important to take not that the KMILOT Award can be renewed for up to three extra years. The KMILOT Eligibity Criteria are as follows:
- Must be an international student. They must not hold a Canadian citizenship and not become a permanent resident of Canada as well.
- All candidates must already be planning to pursue their studies in Canada and be able to attain a Canadian Study permit/visa.
- Available for their future undergraduate studies in the University of British Columbia and is willing to be allocated at the Okanagan campus.
- Will be applying for their very first undergraduate degree.
- Has fulfill the requirements to the first choice program.
- Has met the UBC’s English Language Admission Standards.
- Has an outstanding academic track record (for reference, students are expected to achieve all As in their report cards.)
- Is nominated by their host institution for the KMILOT Awards.
- Displays the need for financial assistance, which can be proven in the application documents.
Requirements
Besides fulfilling the eligibility criteria of the KMILOT Award, all incoming candidates will also be asked to provide several necessary documents to fully support their application forms. One thing that needs to be noticed is that there are different requirements for different types of candidates, so please take a look below to see what you will be asked to upload in your application procedure:
For High School Students
- Grades 9-12: official interim or mid-year transcripts. If possible, predicted final grades as well.
- Students completing IB Diploma: official, predicted IB grades.
- For students pursuing British-patterned education: valid copies of their GSCE ‘O’ Level, GCE ‘AS’, ‘A’ Level certificates. If required, mock ‘AS’ or ‘A’ level grades would suffice as well.
- For students pursuing US high school diplomat: official transcripts of Grade 9-11 grades as well as interim results for courses in progress in Grade 12.
- If the above does not apply to you: submit in SAT or ACT achievement tests.
- If you have completed high school: send in the final transcript of your results.
For College/University Transfer Students
- Official, valid academic transcripts sent directly to the University of British Columbia from all post-secondary institutions.
- Course descriptions.
- Final secondary school/high school academic transcripts.
UBC English Language Requirements
- All candidates must pass the University’s English Language Admission Standard
How to Apply
To apply for the KMILOT Awards, all candidates are required to apply for UBC’s undergraduate programme beforehand. In order to do this, the nominee can just simply complete and submit their online admission application through this website. Once the candidate has applied for the undergraduate programme, they can now move forward to the KMILOT Award application. To start off, download the official KMILOT Checklist for the application package. From there on, candidates must be able to ask for the necessary forms from their high school guidance counsellors or post-secondary administrators. In order to proceed to the Selection Committee, these forms have to be completed and submitted. All incomplete applications will not be accepted by the committee and will automatically be disqualified from the application procedure. Therefore, please pay attention to the available checklist, as all of the details and application instructions are all stated clearly on the document.
Important Dates
Now that you’re all prepped up for the KMILOT Award, it’s time to jot down these important notes! Please be informed that all of these dates are extremely crucial to the entire application procedure. Should you miss one of these dates, your application is bound for rejection. Because of that, please take of these dates as seriously as you can.
Below are the KMILOT Award Important Dates:
- December 1, 2019: Award nomination package submission deadline. Submissions must be done by the candidate’s school or post-secondary institution.
- December 1, 2019: Online admissions application submission deadline. This application must be done by the candidates themselves.
- January 31, 2020: The official announcement of your completed KMILOT Award nomination package. Should you not receive an e-mail by this date, please directly reach out to the University of British Columbia as soon as possible.
- January 31, 2020: Deadline for supporting documents submission. This is for candidates who were unable to upload certain documents by the initial deadline (1 December, 2019).
- Mid-April 2020: The official announcement of the KMILOT Award.
