About University of Bologna

The University of Bologna (Unibo) is a research university based in Bologna, Italy. Established in 1088 by an organized student guild (hence studiorum), it is the world’s oldest university, and one of the largest academic institutions in Italy and Europe. It is one of Italy’s most prestigious universities, frequently ranked in the top positions of national rankings.

It was the first place of study to use the word universitas for student and master enterprises, which helped define the organization (particularly its famous law school) based in Bologna, Italy. The logo of the university bears the motto “Alma mater studiorum” (“nourishing mother of studies”) and the year A.D. 1088, and its 11 schools have around 86,500 pupils.

It has campuses in Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini and a Buenos Aires, Argentina, branch center abroad.

University of Bologna Scholarship, an Overview

The University of Bologna offers to deserving international students who wish to register for First Cycle, Second Cycle or Single Cycle Degree Programmes at the University of Bologna for academic year of 2020/2021. The scholarship values are including:

  • Study grants of €11,000 gross (for candidates applying for Unibo Action 2);
  • Tuition fee waivers (for candidates applying for Unibo Action 1).

The study grants and the tuition fee waivers are assigned on the basis of SAT and GRE, for one academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

You can apply for University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1&2 if:

  • you are in possession of (or about to obtain) a valid qualification for access to your chosen degree programme, issued by an institution outside of the Italian education system. Students holding a diploma issued by an Italian school established outside Italy can apply as well;
  • you will take one of the following tests by the application deadline: a) if you are interested in registering in a First or Single Cycle Dgree Programme, the SAT test; or b) if you are interested in registering in a Second Cycle Degree Programme, the GRE test.
  • you are less than 30 years old upon the deadline of the call for application.

The SAT and GRE are aptitude and skills assessment tests which can be taken in authorised centres in several countries around the world. The tests are in English. You must register for the tests on the websites of managing institutions.

How to Apply

For students wishing to submit an application for University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1&2 through SAT must:

  1. register on studenti.unibo.it if not already in possession of a Unibo username and password (institutional credentials). To do so:
  2. connect to studenti.unibo.it, access the “Register” section, and register;
  3. fill in all the mandatory fields and follow the instructions to create a Unibo username and password (foreign students not in possession of an Italian tax code number should go to the “International students registration” section);
  4. following the first access, the PUK code must be replaced with a personal password.
  5. log in to studenti.unibo.it, entering your Unibo username and password, and click “Calls”;
  6. select “Bando Unibo Azione 1&2 – SAT/Unibo Action 1&2 – SAT Call”; only students in possession of the requirements of this call will be able to fill in the application online;
  7. check your contact information;
  8. enter all required details;
  9. upload all required documents in pdf format.

Applicants must attach of the following documents to their University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1&2 – SAT application , under penalty of nullity:

  1. a copy of their currently valid passport;
  2. a copy of their unnofficial SAT test score report (applicants must also send their official SAT score reports through CollegeBoard);
  3. a certificate confirming the qualifications required for admission to the chosen degree programme, and the school report cards of the last two years.

Applicants must attach of the following documents to their University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1&2 – GRE application , under penalty of nullity:

  1. a copy of their currently valid passport;
  2. a copy of their unnoficial GRE score report (applicants must also send their official GRE score reports throught ETS);
  3. a certificate confirming the qualifications required for admission to the chosen degree programme, along with transcripts of records with exams passed and relative marks.

All documents presented by applicants must be in English, Italian, French or Spanish. All documents in any other language must be supported by a translation into English or Italian on plain (non-letterhead) paper. The translation may be done directly by the candidate. The submission of the translated documents only is not enough, they must always be accompanied by the original documents.

Applications that are not properly filled in or complete with all the required documents will not be accepted.

  • Publication of the call for applications: 6 February 2020, at 12.00 CET
  • Applications dedaline: 30 April 2020, at 12.00 CET
  • Publication of results: May 2020

Call for applications University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1&2 – GRE (for students who are interested in registering in a Second Cycle Degree Programme)

  • Publication of the call for applications: 6 February 2020, at 12.00 CET
  • Applications deadline: 31 March 2020, at 12.00 CET
  • Publication of results: April 2020

The application must be submitted exclusively through Studenti Online.

Please take note that you must take the SAT or GRE test by the application deadline. The only upcoming date to take the SAT outside the USA is 14 March 2020, with the registration deadline on 14 February 2020.

Remember to send your scores to the University of Bologna selecting the codes 6993 for the SAT test and 7850 for the GRE test.

According to the order of the ranking, winners will be assigned University of Bologna Scholarship Action 2 study grants until all the grants are used up. Next, winners in the subsequent positions will be assigned University of Bologna Scholarship Action 1 tuition fee waivers, until the entire budget is used up. It is not possible to receive both benefits.
